Description

(No Model) W. H. WILLIAMS.
NoN-REFILLABLB BOTTLE.
l\To.-585,353.` Patented June 29,1897.
NITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM HENRY WILLIAMS, OFJAOKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,353, dated J' une 29, 1897.
Application filed September 15,1896. Serial No. 605,866. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM HENRY WIL- LIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in non-refillable bottles; and the object is to provide a seal or cap to be applied to a bottle at the factory where it is filled, said cap to be shattered or broken when the contents are used.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same iigures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure lis a perspective view representing the upper part of a bottle with my improved seal in place. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view, of the seal detached from the bottle.
l represents the neck of a bottle, and 2 the usual flange around the mouth.
3 is the cork, which is provided with a metal disk 4, on which the seal rests.
The seal proper consists of two members 5 and 6, which are practically counterparts, except that the upper end 7 of the member 5 is beveled upwardly and the contiguous end 8 of the member 6 is beveled downwardly, so that as they are brought together over the cork the beveled ends 7 and 8 will slide past each other, the end 7 sliding on top of the opposite end 8. Their' larger ends 9 lO are formed with vertical semicircular recesses 11 12, which meet and encompass the neck of the bottle immediately below the flange.
After the bottle has been lled, the cork inserted, and the metal disk secured by its edges 4' a suitable cement is applied to the under side of the member 5 and to the upper side of the member 6, which are then brought together from opposite directions, so that the upper parts will rest on the disk on the cork and the lower recessed parts encompass the neck below the flange. After the cement sets or becomes hard it will be impossible to withdraw the cork Without destroying the seal.
In practice I prefer to make this seal of friable material, and it may be of transparent glass, with a suitable trade-mark or other advertisement cast therein and the members joined together with a transparent acid-proof cement.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my said invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
The combination with a bottle, its cork and a metal disk seated upon the cork, of a seal comprising two friable U-shaped members which are formed at their lower ends with semicircular recesses to embrace the bottleneck below its b ead, and with reversely-beveled upper ends which extend entirely across the cork and disk and overlap, and an adhesive substance interposed between the overlapping ends and between the disk and the contiguous overlapping end, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY WILLIAMS.
