- D. M. BEAL.
NON-EEFILLABLB BOTTLE.
N0 6O1,117. Patented Mar. 22, 1898'.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL M. BEAL, OF CATSKILL, TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,117, dated March 22, 1898.
Application filed March 17, 18 9 '7.
To ctZZ whmn it 17mg concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. BEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Catskill, in the county of Colfax and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to non-refillable bottles, the object being to provide means whereby aftera bottle has once been filled it will be impossible to remove the contents thereof without plainly indicating that the same has been emptied. By means of the improved construction the bottle can subsequently be used for containing liquid, but owing to a mutilation of a portion of the bottle the original appearance thereof can never be restored.
The invention consists in a non-refillable bottle embodying certain novel features and details of construction hereinafter fully set forth, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1- is a sectional view through the neck portion of a bottle, showing the improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the frangible guard.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bottle of any preferred form or size provided with the usual neck 2, from which the usual rim or flange at the top is preferablyomitted.
For the purpose of carrying out the present invention the body of the bottle is provided adjacent to the junction of the neck 2 therewith with an annular upwardly-projecting flange 3,. arranged close to the neck of the bottle, but sufficiently removed therefrom to leave an, annular groove or space. 5 designates a guard which is substantially U- shaped, said guardbeing formed from glass or other frangible material and of a size adapting it to fit over the neck of the bottle and also over the stopper 6. The upper por- Serial No. 627,943. (No model.)
tion of the guard 5 is thicker than the lower or terminal portions thereof, the lower ends of the terminal portions being materially decreased in thickness, as indicated at 7, so as to increase the liability thereof to break when strain is put thereon. Below the thin portion 7 the extreme ends 8 of the terminals are wedge-shaped or thickened, and these thickened portions are adapted to be inserted in the groove 4 above described.
After the guard 5 has been placed over the neck 2 and over the stopper 6, so as to bring the lower ends 8 into the groove 4, any suitable plastic composition or cement is placed in the groove 4, the same flowing around the lower ends of the guard, and when said cement or composition hardens it forms abond which locks the lower ends of the guard within the groove, thus preventing the extraction of the stopper 6. In order to remove the stopper, a sharp blow is given the terminal portions of the guard 5, thus fracturing the guard at the point 7. When the upper part of the guard 5 falls off, the cork or stopper 6 may then be easily drawn. This, however, destroys the original appearance of the bottle or package, and said appearance cannot be restored without employing a new guard 5.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with abottle, of a guard in the form of a U-shaped inflexible strip of frangible material designed to fit over the neck and extend across the stopper and having its lower extremities thickened, the body of the bottle having in its upper portion adjacent to the neck a groove to receive such extremities, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a bottle having an annular and upwardly-opening groove in the upper part of the body thereof adjacent to the neck, of a frangible and inflexible guard-strip adapted to fit over the top of the neck and extend across the stopper with its extremities entering the groove in the body, said extremities being thickened for engage ment with the filling of cement or analogous composition placed in the groove in the bottle, substantially as described.
3. In an article of manufacture, a frangispecification in the presence of two subscribble and inflexible guard-strip of substantially ing Witnesses.

In testimony whereof I have signed this J. B. FLOCK.
