Description

R. F. TATTERSALL.
NoN REPILLABLE BoTTLE (No Model.)
No. 597,474. Patented Jan. 18,1898,
UNITED Sterns ROBERT F.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letterslatent No. 597,474, dated January 18, 1898.
Application led February 18, 1897. Serial No. 623,951. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT F. TArTnRsALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles and I do yhereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain lnew and useful improvements in non-refiliable botties, the object being to provide a bottle having a neck so constructed that after the bottle has been initially filled the neck must irst be broken in order to empty the contents of the bottle, whereby any attempt to refill the bottle with an inferior article Will give visual evidence of the fact that the bottle has been tampered with.
To this end my invention consists in a bottle having a neck provided with a frangible portion, said neck having the mouth thereof closed after the bottle has been initiallT lled by heating' and softening the glass and bendling the neck to a point or apex to form a closed Wall and securing the same by a cord or Wire embedded in the glass, this construction insuring that the frangible portion must first be removed before access can be had to the contents of the bottle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows an elevational View of the upper portion of a bottle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral l designates a bottle-body which may have any desired shape or contour, the precise form not being essential. The bottle neck 2 is provided at or about the center thereof with a weakened or frangible portion 3, formed in the present instance by a circumferential groove which renders the Wall of the neck at that point thinner than the other portions thereof, so that a slight tap on the upper portion of the bottle-neck above the said groove Will cause the said portion to be separated from the neck.
After the bottle has been initially filled a cork 5 is inserted into the neck below the said frangible portion, and then the upper portion of the bottle-neck is heated to a fused or softened condition and bent to a point or apex 6 to form a closed Wall to prevent the eduction of the contents of the bottle or the insertion of liquid into the same. A cord or Wire 7 is then embedded in the glass and tied around the said point or apex, so that any attempt made to get access to the bottle will result in the point being broken off or the entire portion of the neck above the fracturinggroove being broken or mutilated in such manner that the bottle will show upon inspection that it has been tampered with.
My invention provides a simple and efficient construction of non-refillable bottle which entirely dispenses with valves and the like and which may be manufactured at a very small cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, is-
A non-refillable bottle comprising a bod),T and a neck, the said neck being provided With a frangible portion and having its upper eX- treinity closed by heating it to a fused or softened condition and bending the same inward to a point or apex to form a Wall closing the mouth of the bottle, and a cord or Wire embedded in the glass and tied around the said point or apex, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
sonner u TATrnusALL.
