BOTTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,842, dated October 19, 1897.

My invention relates to certain new andl useful improvements in bottles, the object of the same being to provide a bottle which cannot be refilled without detection or in its original condition after the contents thereof have been removed.

The invention consists of a bottle whose neck is formed with an internal annular groove with a longitudinal channel leading thereinto on one side, an external annular groove or weakened portion just above said internal groove, and an internal enlargement at the upper end of said neck forming a shoulder on the inner surface thereof, a sealing-cork of ordinary construction adapted to iit within the lower end of said neck just beneath said internal groove, a bar or disk of sti material fitting within said internal groove upon the upper surface of said cork, a secondary cork fitting within the upper part of said neck, and a plastic seal fitting within the enlarged portion of the upper end of said neck. The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this speciiication, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of abottle constructed according to my invention, the same being shown in its sealed condition. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the internal annular groove in the neck and the channel leading into the same on one side. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view ofthe bar which fits within said neck, and Fig. tis a horizontal sectional view taken on the line x w of Fig. 1.

The neck 1 of my improved bottle is formed with an internal annular groove 2 therein,

and with a longitudinal channel 3 leading into said groove at one side, as clearly shown. The said neck is also formed with an external annular groove or weakened portion'i, and has an internal enlargement 5 at its upper end forminga shoulder 6. Fitting within the lower end of the neck 1, with its upper side just beneath the groove 2, is a'sealing-cork 7, which is securely held in place by means of a bar or disk 8, of metal, wood, or other stiff material, which iits within the groove 2. Said bar is inserted into place by forcing one end thereof into the groove at a point just opposite the channel 3. When in this position the opposite end is free to be forced downwardly, and then said bar is turned so that both ends'thereof are engaged by the upper shoulders, which are formed by said groove 2. Located on the inside of the neck 1 at a point above the external groove 4 is a supplemental cork 9 of any suitable form and construction. Said cork is securely held in place and the bottle is prevented from being opened without detection, by means of a seal l0, placed in the upper end of the neck l. Said seal may consist of plaster-of-paris, mortar, melted glass, or other suitable material which will harden after it has been applied.

From the foregoing description it is thought that the manner of applying the sealing-cork to the neckl of the bottle may be readily understood. When it is desired to remove the contents, a light tap is given to the upper end of the neck, which cracks the same along the line of the groove or weakened portion 4 and permit-s of the disconnection of the two parts of said neck. The bar or disk 8 may then be turned by hand and removed from the groove 2 and the sealing-cork 7 afterward drawn by an ordinary corkscrew; It will also be seen that it is impossible to remove the contents of the bottle in any other way than that just described. When this has been done, evidence is given that the original contents of the bottle have been tampered with, and the bottle cannot be refilled in its original condition.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a non-refillable bottle, the combination with the neck thereof having an internal an- IOO nular groove therein, a longitudinal channel leading into said groove, an external groove or weakened portion therein, and an internal enlargement in said neck forming a shoulder at its extreme upper end, of a sealing-cork ternal groove, and a supplemental cork tting within said neck above said external groove and held in place by a seal of plastic material which iills the enlarged portion of said neck and engages the shoulder formed thereby, substantially as and for the purpose described.
