A TTORNEM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcn.
JOHN A. DAVIES, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,398, dated. May 19, 1896.
Application filed June 20. 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. DAVIES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to bottles; and the object thereof is to provide a bottle which having been once filled and emptied cannot be again filled or reused.
The invention is fully disclosedin the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which' Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of the neck of a bottle provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a similar section at right angles to that of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view, and Fig. 4 represents a detail of the construction.
In the practice of my invention 1 form within the neck A of a bottle an annular cavity or recess B, at the bottom of which is an annular ledge or shoulder O, on which is placed a plate D, one side of which is out out, forming an opening or passage E, and to the bodyportion of the plate D is hinged a valve F, adapted to close the opening E in the plate D.
Above the plate D and resting thereon is a plug or stopper G, the lower end of which is adapted to fit within the annular cavity or recess B and to rest upon the plate D, and the upper end of which is provided with an annular extension H, adapted to rest on the neck or nozzle of the bottle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
One side of the lower end of the stopper G is cut away, forming a chamber or recess K, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to permit of the operation of the valve F, as hereinbefore described, and formed centrally in the top of said plug or stopper is a vertical port or passage L, which communicates with two side branches M, each of which communicates with corresponding vertical branches or passages N, as is also shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said vertical branch passages N being so arranged as to open into the chamber or recess K about centrally of the neck of the bottle $erial No. 553,388. (No model.)
and over the valve F. In this class of de vices the bottle must first be filled before the non-removable stopper is applied, and this having been done the plate 0, with the valve F hinged thereon, is insert-ed into its position and the plug or stopper G secured in place by any desired means or in any desired manner, the position thereof being such that the lower end or side which extends downwardly to the plate 0 will rest upon the slide portion of said plate, so as to hold the same in position and not interfere with the operation of the valve F. The nozzle or discharge-opening of the bottle may then be closed by a cork or plug in the usual manner, and when it is desired to empty the bottle or discharge its contents or a portion thereof it is only necessary to remove said cork or plug and hold the -bottle in an inverted or tilted position, when the valve F will be lifted from its seat and the contents of the bottle will flow out around said valve through the passages N and M and L, as will be readily understood, and this process may be continued or repeated until the bottle is entirely emptied.
If an attempt be made to refill the bottle by pouring liquids thereinto, the valve F will at once be reseated and no fluids can enter the bottle, and this operation of the valve will be the same in any position in which the bottle can be held in order to pour liquids thereinto.
The arrangement of the passages M and N is such that no wire, tool, or other instrument can be inserted through the discharge port or passage L to interfere with or prevent the operation of the valve, and the plug or stopper G being non-removable it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
My invention also, however, contemplates the use of a magnetized plate 0, to which the valve F is hinged, and, said valve F being of metal, it will be apparent that the magnetic action of the plate 0 will be such as to close the valve and hold it closed after the contents of the bottle have been discharged, the object being to make the magnetism of the plate 0 such as to secure the closing of the valve after the contents of the bottle have been discharged, but also to permit of the opening thereof by means of the pressure of the fluid contents of the bottle, as will be readily understood.
It is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction shown and described may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations in the form, construction, and combination of the various parts as fairly come within the scope thereof. I
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of a bottle-neck having a recess B therein and an annular shoulder C, a plate D arranged 011 said shoulder and provided with a passage E, a valve F hinged to said plate, a plug G, the lower end of said plug fitting within the recess B, and resting upon the plate D, an annular extension 11 on the upper end of said plug resting upon the bottle-neck, one side of the lower end of the plug being cut away to form a chamber K to permit the valve to operate said plug being provided with a vertical passage L communicatingwith the two side branches M each of said branches communicating with corresponding branches N, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 17th day of June, 1895.
JOHN A. DAVIES.
