NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1916.
I Application'led December 26,1914. Seria1-No.879,170.
To all whom #may concern:
Be it known that. I, OVEDIA B. FoRTNnY, a citizen'of the-United States, residing at Stratford; in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain.. vnew and useful'l Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a v of this closure-is placed upon the neck 14 of -the rod and is held' thereon by having the outer end of the neck formed into a head 16 specification..
Thisinvention relates to anon-refillable' bottle of the breakable neck type and the principal objecto the invention is to provide an improved type of closure for the bottle neck which is supported in the bottle neckat the properl heightfby a supporting rod engaging'v the; bottom of the bottle and which is so constructed that it may expand i while beingpushed into vthe bottle neck and thus completely -close'thebottle neck and prevent'leakage.
Another object of the invention is to'so construct a closure that the expansihlelea may be held in an elevated p osition'while the bottle 'is being filled and may then movev to 'a position to engage a corkfforming part of the closure when theJ closure is movedito a set -positions Another ob'efct of the invention-isl tov-pro-v.. vide a closure which will be very'siinplein f construction and whichV -f will'A therefore Abe very cheap to manufacture,andi-.maybe placed upon themarket. vatfa .small lost;
Another object of.' the invention'xis' to so constructv the closure".that?` Willbe. very.
durable and not liable/to' easily orfquiekly get out of order. f'
This invention'is illustrated in the accom? panying drawingswhereinz; l
Figure 1 is .a view'showinga bottle in vertical section withthe improved ,closure in position to close theneck of the bottle and thus prevent the contents from passing out of the same.' Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view oftheneck of the bottle with the closure in the position t0 permit the bottle to be filled.- Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4v is a plan view of.I
the cork which forms a part of this closure. Fig. 5 is a perspectiveview of one of the leaves which are supported by the springs shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 10 indicates a bottle which is provided with an outlet neck 11 having an en largement 12 formed at a pointV adjacent its inner end'. From an inspection of Fig. 3 it which clamps the cork disk 13 tightly against the collar 17. This disk 13 is of such size that it will readily pass through the neck 1l into the enlargement 12 .and
from an4 inspection of Fig. 3 it will be read- .ily seen that when the cork is in the enlarge-- ment it will engage the sidesthereof and form a tight closure. p The leaves or supplementary closures 18 are shaped as shown in Figs. 3 and 5 so thatwhen the closure is -in the b set position shown Ain Figs. 1 and 3 .the leaves will conform' to the contour of the enlargement and will 4 .thus sli-dye upon the cork disk 13. This will cause a tight closure thus preventing'l any danger. whatever of the contents of the boti l tle'A leaking out pass the closure. These leaves 13 are carried 'by the free arm 19 of the springs 20, the inner arms ofthe springs ".ZQare-secured tothe collar 17 and from anV l.inspection of Fig. 2 it will be readily seen ,thatfwhenfthe'closure is inthe position to permit the bottle yto 4he iilled the outer arms .'Will be bent' to eXtend'through the cutout or notches 210i the corkdisk`13 and support ,the sleevesilSat an upward incline.
:.VVhen'thi'sbottle is'in use .and itis desired I' to'fill the same for its initial sale the bottle is iirst filled withany liquid. and the closure is then inserted'. ".Therd will drop through the necklofthe bottle and the leaves will then be moved toward each other until the .closure'has reached the position shown in Fig. 2 after which it will be forced through the neck of the bottle until the rod contacts with `the bottom of the` bottle. The closure will now bein the position. shown in Fig. 1
with the arms '19 of the springs expanded f and the leaves resting flat upon the cork disk.
When, in this position the bottle will be closed and the contentsthereof cannot pass out. If desired a suitable. stopper such as a cork may be placed Ain the outer end portion ofthe bottle neck'as an additional security against leakage. It is of coursey understood that the rod and springs and also the leaves 3'D`andj having their outer arms extending tobottle neck, and leavesv passing through the Hwhen said closure 1s in an inoperative posi- 5 contents Vof the bottle the neck will he broken at a point adj acentthe leaves and the closure can then be removed. rlhe contents of the bottle can now be poured-out' but it will be impossible to relill the bottle without it beio ing broken and thus show that the bottle 1s not known since the bottle neck will be as originally received."
lt is of course understood that this closure may lbe, used with bottles having different vl-. .shaped necks from that shown, the leaf he,
ing shaped to conform to the contour of the enlargement it the bottle `with an enlargement or leaf being of such v -.'SiZe that the closure may he used with a bot- IZ tiev 4 having a neck of the same diameter throughout its length if such is the case.
- llVhat is claimed is z l. A bottle provided with an outlet neck having an enlargement formed intermediate 2.5 its length,
a supporting rod extending through said bottle into the neck thereof, a disk `secured to the outer end of said rod, springs positioned -heneath said disk and raving their inner arms secured to said rod Ward the sides of the secured to the free ends of the outer arms of said Springs and resting upon the outer face of said disk when said closure is in set posi 35 tion.
:12. A bottle having an outlet neck, a supporting rod extending through said bottle .into said outlet neck, a disk secured to the outer end of said rod and having its periph- 40 `ery provided with oppositely disposed cutouts, springs including inner andouter arms, e inner arms being secured to said rod bey, neath 'said disk and the outer arms extending .toward the side walls of the bottle neck and cutouts of said disk tion, and leaves secured to the outer ends of @copies of this patent may beobtained for ve cents each by addressing -upon the outer racen' neck is provided j ineens@ lthe outer' arms of se d springs. and resting t'isaid diskwhen said closure is in a set pesitjieiu.v 3. A bottle provided with an outlet neri* rod extending througl'rsa'id hottie an( said neck, a disk carried by said rod, springs carried hy said rod, and leaves carried by said springs and resting upon said disk when said closure is in a closed position.
A closure of the character described comprisingal supporting' rod, a disk carried by said rod, i springs includinginner and outer arms, the inner arms being secured said rod and the outer arms-extending in di verging relation to the inner arms, and leaves carried by the free end portions outer arms of said springfand extendinr` overlapping relation to said disl 5. A closure ofthe character kdescrihed comprising a supporting rod having one end 'portion reduced te form a neck 'cellar mouited upon said neck, a disk mounted upon said neck, the outer end portion otthe neck being formed into a head to clamp the disk against said collar, springs'carried oy said rod, and leaves carried b v said spr'A and extending in overlapping relation said disk. i
6. A closure of the character described comprisingha supporting rod, a `disk carried by said supporting rod, springs carried hy' said' supporting rod, said disk being pro vided with cutouts through which said springs pass when said closure is in an inop erative position, and leaves carried by said springs and extending toward said disk.
closure of the character described comprising a supporting rod, a disk carried by said rod, springs carried by said rod, and leaves carried hv said springs and extending' toward each other-to overlap said disk.
In testimony whereof i ahx my signature in presence of tivo Witnesses.
