Description

W. MORGENSTERN. Bottle-Stoppers.
Patented Sep.3, 1872.
1 .W /mla MSXMQUQQQQ. GMM/mf UNITED STATES PATENT CEErcE.
WILLIAM MORGEN STERN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. ISLIII, dated September 3, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MORGEN- STERN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Stopper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear7 and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to Ymake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specificati-on, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a bottle-stopper, consisting of a supporting-plate provided with a hole to en ga gewith a recess formed beneath the head of the stopper, said stopper being made of India rubber, cork, or other soft and elastic material, so that when its head is forced through the hole in the supporting-plate it expands, and as the supporting-plate engages with the recess beneath said head the stopper f is firmly retained in position.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a bottle or jar, around the neck of which is fastened a wire, B, which is formed with two loops, a b, one opposite the other, as shown in the drawing. Previous to twisting-the wire so as to form said loops, however, it is passed through.
an eye in the supporting-plate C, and also through an eye in the cam-shaped catch D,
and when the loops a b are completed they form the hinges f0r said plate and catch.-
the hole in the supporting-plate7 expands and allows said plate to engage with the recess o and to retain the stopper firmly in position. By this arrangement I am enabled to remove the Stoppers, if the same are worn out, and to replace them by new ones with ease and facility. The catch D is formed with thumbpiece c, and with a cam-shaped nose, f, which, when pressed over a raised lip, g, formed at the edge of the supporting-plate, serves to depress the same, together with the stopper, so that the bottle is securely closed. B y forcing the catch back the supporting-plate is released and the stopper can easily be withdrawn from the bottle.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The stopper E, formed with a recess, o, beneathits head d, to engage with a hole in the supporting-plate, substantially as set forth.
This specilication signed by me this 17th day of June, 187 2.
WILLIAM MORGEN STERN.
