Bc it known that I, G.' W.' UFFINQTOiv, of Mechanicsburg, in the county of Champaign, and State of Ohio, have invented o. new and useful improvement in Fruit Jars, &c. and I do hereby declare that, the following is a, full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the .art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, form-ing part of this specicntion.

The present invention relates to that 'class of fruit jars, 850 in which a rigid plate or cover is provided, having around its edge a web or band of elastic India. rubber for forming an air-tight joint between the said cover and the jar., Sac., on which it is placed; and this invention consists in e novel mannenof securing the said elastic web or band to the cover or plate in connection with a, peculiar form, to the neck of the jar, can, 86e., on which it tits, whereby many iinportant advantages are obtained, as will be obvious from the following detail description thereof, reference being had to the aceompanyingplate of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a. central lvertical section-through the neck ot" a fruit jor; and

A, in the drawings, represents the plate or cover to the fruit jar, can, &e the edge B of which is turned or bent over, securing an elastic web or band of-India. rubber, E, to it; C, the neck of' the jar, Svc., around .the mouth D of `which it is turnedror curved inward, as plainly shown in the drawings. Over this inouth the cover or plate is placed, ttng around and upon the same, whcznturning the elastic web or band E down and over the outside of the mouth D, the `cover is made perfectly arbtight, nnd by the pressure of air upon the top ot the same, owing to the vecuurn'or partial vacuumI upon the inside of the jar, &c., caused by the cooling of the fruit therein, the cover is rrnly held. upon the jar,'when, having come to a' perfectly `nir-tight seat thereon, the clasticweb is then turned up from the vsides of the jai-, mou'th, and over and upon the upper side of the cover or plate the said elastic web, by being thus turned 11p, preserving its original `form, and also prevented from becoming relaxed, which would occur were it -left over the 'mouth of the jar.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenti The combination and arrangement of Vthe plate A, elesticband E mouth of jar D, curved inward so as to form a seat for the cover A, substantially as herein set forthfor the purpose specified.
