Description

P.;GRABLBR. l HANDLBPOR REGBPTAGLES.
APPLICATION PILE? FEB. 21, 1910.
Patented sept. 10,1912.
PETER GRABLER, 'OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
HANDLE FOR RECEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application ed February 21, 191D.
Patented Sept. 10,1912. Serial No. 545,224ik To ad whom yit may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER GRABLER, .a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in handles for receptacles and is particularly designed as` a lremovable handle for bottles and the like.
More specifically the invention contemplates a handle comprising a loop for receiving the body portion of the bottle and also for creating a certain spring tension on a pair oflhandle portions which project upward from the ,body portion to a point at the neck and form the handle and are at this point provided with a pair of shoulders which receive the locking clip together with a pair of clamping portions which are adapted to extend around the neck of the bottle.
Invention also resides in providing the shoulder portions of the handle portions with suitable grooves or recesses for receiving the locking clip and arranging upon the locking clip suitable cam flanges which cooperate with the shoulder portions of the handle portions to force the clip into a vertical position and to provide the clip at its upper portion with a lid which engages over the mouth of the bottle. The arrangement of this mechanism is such that the lid is held with a spring tendency upon the mouth of 'the bottle.
Further invention resides in certain details of construction hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a bottle provided with my improved handle and showing the locking clip provided with a lid; Figf2 is a Sect-ion taken just below the neck and through the locking clip; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the locking clip. provided with a lid and showing the cam flanges; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a bottle provided with my improved handle with a locking clip having a thumb piece and notlprovided with a lid; and F 5,is a section taken below the rim of the mouth' lof the bottle and through the locking clip.
In carrying out my invention any preferred form and construction of parts may be employed so long as they'possess the necessary characteristics` but I have-shown one form in the drawings which meets the requirements with greet eiiiciency, and in such embofflimcnt l represents the body portion of the bottle. 2 represents the neck, and 3 the rim about the neck. These parts may be of any shape and size and the device may be varied to lit them.
The device comprises a loop 4i passing around the body portion of the bottle and has bentupward therefrom two handle portions 5 and G which incline slightly out- `ward from each other and are bent in toward t-he neck and toward each other forrrr ing shoulder portions 7 and recesses 8. The free ends of the wire are bent around lin clamping portions 9 which receive the neck of the bottle. If desired a clip shoulder l0 may be formed by notching the wire atv the recess, as shown in Fig. 2. Normally thel handle portions have, suflicient spring tendv ency away from each other so that the clamping portions 9 do not firmly engage the neck, but in order that they should engage the neck tightly a locking clip 1l is provided, and this clip is provided with openings 12 fo-r receiving the wire portions at the recesses.
The fiat rear face of the clip may engage the clip shoulders 10 so that the clip will not slide back readily, and further so that it may swing to and from the rim of the bottle freely. In order to increase the normal tendency of the clip to assume substantially a vertical position, as shown in Fig 1,' and in engagement with the rim 3 of the bottle, a clamping flange 13 is arranged at` each edge of the clip l1, and these'fianges are bent inward above the wire portions so that when the clip is drawn back away from the rim of the bottle these fianges will engage the wire and cause the two handle portions to be forced together against their outward spring tendency. The effect of this yis to give a spring action to the clip and to force it against the rim of the neck ofthe bottle so that a lid 14, secured to the upper edge of the clip, will be held tightly" on the mouth of the bottle. The lid may be opened by means of a thumb pie f The clip ll is preferably curved at the ottoni as shown in side elevation in-Fig. lso that its lower edge will not engage the neck of the bottle and preventthe lid from being raised. The
Aswinging operation for opening the lid.
' cesses for engaging'the neck of the bottle, a
portions, and cam flanges arranged on said shoulders 10 in addition to preventing the clip from being drawn back upon the handles readily, also serve als an abutment against which the clip may bear in the In Figs. 4 and 5 the clip 11 is made straight and is provided with a thumb piece 16 extending at right angles therefrom. In this instance the wire at the recesses 8 is not provided with a shoulder but the clip merely engages in the recesses.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A handle for bottles and the like comprising a body-loop, a pair of handle portions extending from said loop and having at the upper ends thereof portions bentinward toward each other forming recesses, curved clamping portions beyond said reclip having openings receiving the bent-in clip above the bent-in portions and yadapted to engage the same and force the clip againstthe neck of the bottle, said clip and adapted mouth of the bott-le.
2. A wire handle for bottles and the like pomprising a body loep, a pair of handle to seat itself in the and a lid carried by portions extending upward from said loop and having a sprin tendency away from each other, said han le portions being bent in toward each other to form shoulder portions and having its free ends curved to form clamping members for the neck of the bottle, said shoulder portions having notches cut in the wire to form clip shoulders, and a locking clip having' openings therein for receiving the wire of the shoulders, said clip being bent outward at its lower edge and engaging the clip shoulders so that it may swing toand from the neck of the bottle freely, cam fianges extending toward each other and from the edges of said clip and' having inclined edges extending above the Wire forming the shoulders whereby the spring tendency of the handle forces the clip at its upper edge against the neck of the bottle, and a lid carried by said ,clip and 4extending" over the mouth of the bottle.
- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses as follows:
