A 770/?NEYS UNITED STATES Patented June 213, 1903.
CHARLES A. TATUM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WHITALL TATUM COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
STOPPER Foa RECEPTACLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 731,523, dated June 23, 1903.
Application filed April 14, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. TATUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Beceptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for closing the outlet of a receptacle, and has been devised particularly for use in conjunction with tooth-powder receptacles.
The object is to provide a simple device which in one position will effectively close the outlet of the receptacle and in another position will allow the contents to be poured or shaken out.
I prefer to construct my invention as a part of or an attachment to a stopper, so that the invention may be readily applied to various receptacles.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated two forms of my invention, Figure 1 being a sectional elevation on line 1 1 of Fig. 3, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan, of one form of my invention, while Fig. 4 is a side elevation of .the other form, with parts in section.
In Fig. 1, A indicates the mouth of the bottle or other receptacle containing tooth-powder or the like. The stopper consists of a tube B, having a flange B to fit on the end of the bottle and surrounded at its inner portion-that is, below the flange B with a gas-- ket O, which is generally made of cork, although rubber or any other material might be employed that is adapted to produce a tight joint. Above the flange B there is pivoted to the tube B, on the outside thereof, an elastic arm D,provided with a cap D, adapted to close the outlet of the tube 13. This cap is preferably dished upon the surface that is adapted to engage the outlet, so that it may be locked in position when engaged with said outlet. The pivot of the arm D may be formed by a screw E. On the side of the cap D opposite to that from which the arm D extends I have provided a handle D to facilitate swinging the arm aside when desired. It will be understood that in the normal position the cap D closes the outlet of Serial No. 152,559. (No model.)
the tube D, and the contents of the receptacle cannot escape. 'When the arm D and the cap D are swung aside, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the outlet is cleared, so 5 that the contents may be poured on shaken out of the receptacle.
In Fig. 4 the handle portion D which projects from the cap D at the side-opposite to the arm D, has been lengthened and brought down againstthe side of the tube, to which it is pivoted, as by a screw E, located in alinement with the screw Ethat is, in this case the structure is entirely symmetrical and the handle portion D is elastic and corresponds exactly to the arm D. The operation and advantages of this form of my invention are the same as those described with reference to Figs. 1 to 3.
What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A stopper for receptacles, comprising a tube provided with a flange between its ends,
a gasket surrounding said tube on one side of the flange, and aspring-arm pivoted to the tube on the other side of the flange and provided with a cap adapted to close the outlet of the tube.
2. A stopper for receptacles, comprising a tube having a flange between its ends, agas- 8o ket surrounding the tube at one side of said flange, an elastic arm pivoted to the tube at the other side of the flange and carrying a cap adapted to close the outlet of the tube, and a handle projecting from that side of the cap which is opposite to said arm.
3. A stopper for receptacles, comprisinga tube, a spring-arm pivoted to said tube about an axis transverse to that of the tube and carrying a cap adapted to close the outlet of the tube.
4. The combination with a tube forming an outlet for a receptacle, of a spring-arm pivoted to said. tube about an axis transverse to that of the tube and provided with a cap 5 adapted to close the outlet ofthe tube.
5. The combination with a tube forming an outlet for a receptacle, of a spring-arm pivoted to said tube about an axis transverse to that of the tube, a cap carried by said arm [00 and adapted to close the outlet of the tube, and a handle projecting from the cap at the side opposite to that which is connected with the outlet of the tube, and a handle portion said arm. extending from the cap on the side opposite 6. The combination with a tube forming an to said arm and pivoted to the tube. outlet for a receptacle, of an arm pivoted to In testimony whereof I have signed my I5 5 said tube about an axis transverse to that of name to this specification in the presence of the'tube, and carryinga dished cap adapted two subscribing witnesses. to close the outlet of the tube.
7. The combination with a tube forming an CHARLES TATUM outlet for a receptacle, of an arm pivoted to Witnesses: 10 said tube about an axis transverse to that of JOHN LOTKA,
the tube, and carrying a cap adapted to close EUGENE EBLE.
