SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 363,768, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed February 17, 1887. Serial No. 227,933. (No model.) Patented in England January 20, 1887, No. 876.
To all whom it away concern.-
Be it known that I, DAN RYLANDS, a subject ofthe Queen of Great Britain, residing at Hope Glass Works, Stairfoot, near Barnsley, in the county of York, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Internally Stoppered Bottles, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 876, bearing date January 20, 1887,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bottles which have a ball or other internal stopper which forms an air-tight joint in the mouth thereof, and which bottles are opened bymeans of a valve fitted in the neck; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to construct said valve in such a way as to admit of a freer passagefor the gas from the bottle when the valve is opened, and, second, to also construct the valve so that it forms a perfect and secure airtight joint when closed. I attain these objects by constructing the valve as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section of bottleneck. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the indent in the bottle-neck, wherein the valve fits. Fig. 4 is a front elevation oi the valve, which fits or screws into the said indent. Fig. 5 is a partvertical section of a modified form of valve. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of another form of my improved valve. Fig. 8 is a vertical section, and Fig. 9 a plan, of another modification of my improved valve. Fig. 10 is a vertical section of still another modified form of valve.

The valve A, Figs. 1, 2, and 4:, is screwed into the indent B, Figs. 1, 2, and 3. It has a handle, 0, which is riveted onto the square part or stem d. The male threads t on the valve A may have any suitable number of horizontal slots, f, as shown at Fig. 4:, and the female .threads 9, formed in indent B, may also have any suitable number of slots, h, Fig. 3; but it is preferred not to have slots h when slots f are used, and,vice versa, not to have slots f when slots h are used. In other words, the slots h are the equivalents of the slots f. The vulcanized india-rubber or other packing washer, J, is pressed tight up to thebottom of the indent B, and seals up the vent-hole It when the handle a is turned in one direction. \Vhen the handle 0 is turned in the opposite or re verse direction, the valve A releases the washer J ,and the gas or pressure from the bottle escapes through the slots h andf.
The stem (Z of the valve A, Figs. 5 and G, is made with a head, at, and afterthe valve is screwed into position in the bottleneck the hole a in the handle 0 is placed over the head m, after which the handle 0 is turned round and the head at riveted up, thereby securing the handle 0 to the stem d.
The threaded part of the valve A, Fig. 7, has a square hole formed through it, in which the stem d fits. The handle a is secured to the said stem (1 by means of the nut 0, and the vulcanized or other packing J is made in the form of a ball, and fits tight into a hollow formed in the valve A, as shown. By this means the packing J moves away from the hole with the valve.
In Figs. 8 and 9 the male thread tof the valve A is formed by means of a pieceof wire or other substance, 1, which passes through the valve, as shown. The center portion of the wire p passes through the stem (1, and the han dle ois secured to this stem by the nut o, and the packing J is attached to the valve, as shown.
Referring to Fig. 10, the male threads t are formed on block-ti n or other similar substance, q, which is cast onto the stem 11, the said stem d being made with two collars, r and s, for the purpose of securing the block-tin q to said stem d. The said stem 11 is made of a suitable shape, so that it will not turn within the blocktin q.
After relieving the pressure within the bot tle or receptacle by means of the opening k,
the closing device D can be pushed inward from the outlet 0, and the contents of the vessel or bottle can be removed through the outlet G.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the bottle or receptacle having the outlet 0, a closing device, D, and a screw-threaded recess, B, provided at its inner end with the vent-hole 7.1, and the screwthreaded and slotted valve A, having at its outer end the handle 0, and at its inner end a rubber or other washer, J, substantially as described. other substance J, substantially as described. 2.
