- My invention relates to a bottle-stopper adapted especially for use with bottles the contents of which are to be discharged in small quantities by inverting and shaking the bottleas, for example, bottles for toothwashes or other toilet liquids. It is well known that for the classes of liquids above mentioned it is important to effect a discharge of a small portion of the liquid without unduly exposing the contents of the bottle to the action of the atmosphere; and the primary object of my invention is to provide as a substitute for the use of a glass or cork stopper an elastic or yielding disk situated in the neck of the bottle to allow of the expulsion of the contents in small quantities and the automatic closing of the discharge-opening to seal the remainder of the liquid to the action of the atmosphere and also to prevent the liquid from wasting if the bottle be upset.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,477, dated December 1903 Application filed July 3, 1903'. Serial No. 164,180 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatLJoHN CHARLES Bownss, of the city of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers; and I hereby declare that the following is a clear, full, and exact description of the invention, as will enable others Skilled in the art to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a bottle-stopper adapted especially for use with bottles the contents of which are to be discharged in small quantities by inverting and shaking the bottleas, for example, bottles for toothwashes or other toilet liquids. It is well known that for the classes of liquids above mentioned it is important to effect a discharge of a small portion of the liquid without unduly exposing the contents of the bottle to the action of the atmosphere; and the primary object of my invention is to provide as a substitute for the use of a glass or cork stopper an elastic or yielding disk situated in the neck of the bottle to allow of the expulsion of the contents in small quantities and the automatic closing of the discharge-opening to seal the remainder of the liquid to the action of the atmosphere and also to prevent the liquid from wasting if the bottle be upset.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a vertical section through the neck of a bottle provided with my improved stopper. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the inner end of the stopper.
A is the neck of a bottle.
B is the stopper proper, provided with an axially-situated orifice b traversing the stopper, having an enlarged chamber 1) at the inner end of theorifice b. This chamber is pro vided with a shoulder 12 at right angles to the axis of the orifice b, and against this shoulder is introduced an elastic disk 0, provided with a transverse slit of approximately the same length as the diameter of the orifice h. The outer diameter of the elastic disk 0 approximately fills the internal diameter of the enlarged chamber 19. The elastic disk 0 is held in place in the stopper Bby an annular ring D, which may be made of any suitable material and which is a tight fit into the enlarged 5o chamber b. This retaining-ring D is pushed closeup against the inside face of the elastic disk 0, so as to hold the elastic disk firmly between the shoulder 19 0f the stopper B and the outward face of the retaining-ring D.
The operation of this device is as follows: When it is desired to eject any of the liquid contained in the bottle by inverting the bottle and shaking it axially, the liquid in the bottle is caused to be propelled with force against the inner side of the perforated disk 0. This causes a slight fl e xure of the disk G into the longitudinal opb'fiing l) and caiise's the two sides of the slit to pull awayfrom each other, allowing a small amount of the liquid to be ejected. This slit immediately closes automatically after each expulsion of theliquid, and when the bottle is set upright or lies on its side the elasticity of this disk keeps the discharge tightly closed to prevent the further escape of the liquid contents of the bottle.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to'claim and secure by Letters Patent is as follows: 1. As an article of manufacture, an apertured stopper adapted to fit the neck of a bottle and provided with a recessed lower portion; and an elastic perforated disk supported in said lower portion and adapted to'permit an outward movement of the walls of the perforation by impact of a liquid therewith and to automatically restore said walls to their initial position.
2. As an article of manufacture, an apertured stopper having a recessed lower portion provided with a shoulder at one end, an elastic disk contacting with said shoulder and provided with a singleslit extending across the same, and a retaining-ring within the recess contacting with the edges of said disk.
