UNITED STATES PATENT EEIGE.
CHARLES P. OROSSMAN, OF WEST WARREN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HATTIE S. BROWN, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRAY CRUET-STOPPLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,227, dated January 7, 1879; application filed November 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. GRossMAN, of Vest Warren, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spray Oruet-Stopples, of which the following is a specification The objects of my invention are to provide a cruet-stopple with means for discharging the vinegar or other condiments contained in the cruet or bottle in a fine spray upon the food to be seasoned therewith, so as to more evenly distribute the same, and thereby render such food more palatable by being nicely saturated,
and, f urth ermore, render the operation easy and convenient, as only one hand requires to be employed in order to discharge the liquid in a fine spray from myimproved cruet or bottle, instead of both, as heretofore, wherein the usual glass stopples have to be removed from the neck of the bottle or cruet with one hand,
while the vinegar or other liquid is poured therefrom with the other hand, and more frequently in larger quantities than desirable, rendering the food unpleasant in taste, and altogether a very unsatisfactory and disagreeble operation, besides a waste of material.
My invention consists, principally, in formin g a series of small holes in the top or head of the stopple, such holes communicating with a cylindric hollow body adapted and fitted or ground into the neck of the bottle or cruet, as heretofore; and, further, in providing the exterior of such ground portion as fits within the neck with one or more grooves, into which are secured or fitted rubber rings or other suitable material, so as to strengthen the adhesion against any tendency to displace the same in the act of discharging the contents of the bottle or cruet to which it is applied.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle or cruet provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention removed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal central section of the same.
I A represents the bottle or cruet, constructed of glass or other suitable material, having a suitable mouth and neck, as heretofore, into which is fitted the hollow body portion B of I the glass or other suitable material for the stopple, having a groove, O, formed therein, and provided with a packin g-ring, D, of suitable material to strengthen the adhesion, if required. E represents the head or top of the stopple, provided with a series of slight projections, 8, having a small conical hole, 6, in each, which increase inwardly in size until they reach the large opening or hole H in and extending longitudinally throughout the body portion B of the stopple, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to connect with the interior ofthe bottle or cruet A when placed in its neck, as shown in Fig. 1, and allow vinegar or other liquid vplaced in such cruet or bottle previous to the insertion of the improved stopple to be discharged through the series of small holes 6 in the projections s in afine spray upon the food, or otherwise, as desired. These projections s serve to break adhesion between the several drops or globules of liquid passing out of the series of small holes 0, when the top or head E of the stopple becomes moist externally or immediately surrounding the said projections by particles of the liquid running down out side of the same, after such bottle or cruet has been used. by shaking the same in an inverted position to discharge its contents in a fine spray, and then returned to its former position, as shown in Fig. 1.
I am aware that corks or stopples of bottles have been provided with a single opening formed through a metallic projection connected thereto, so as to discharge the liquid contents of such bottle more gradually than otherwise would be if the stopple were removed and the contents poured from the full-sized mouth or neck; but as such small single opening cannot discharge the contents in a spray, as contemplated by my invention, the beneficial results are not produced by such a device an d that perforated tops for sprinklers and watermg-pots, and other devices, are in common use, and serve for the purposes contemplated, I am well aware. Therefore I do not claim such.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. The hollow stopple provided with a series of conical holes, 6, and projections s at its head E, said holes communicating with the interior H of the body-portion B, having an external groove, 0, and packing D, substanries of small holes, 0, and projections s, so as to discharge the liquid contents of such bottle or cruet in a spray, substantially in the manner described, as and for the purposes set forth.
CHARLES P. CROSSMAN.
