To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES JoRGENsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in bottles and especially with reference to bottles provided with means to prevent them from being refilled, the object of my invention being to provide a cheap, simple and effective bottle of this class, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a bottle constructed in accordance with my invention, and provided with my improved devices to prevent the bottle from being refilled; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the valve element; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the funnel sleeve in which the cork is placed.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a bottle 1, which may be otherwise of any suitable construct-ion, and which may be made of any suitable material with a neck 2, the bore 3 of which is downwardly tapered. The mouth 4 of the bottle is provided wit-h an enlargement 5 in which is a chamber 6 which forms an enlargement of the upper port-ion of the neck bore 3. In the upper wall 7 of this chamber 6 is a clownwardly opening annular groove 8. The mouth or entrance opening 9 of the bottle is at the upper side of the chamber 6, and is concentric with the bore of the neck.
An inverted hollow conical valve 10 operates in the chamber 6 and in the downwardly tapered or contracted portion of the bore of the bottle neck. This valve is closed at its lower end and open at its upper end, and is provided with a radial series of openings 11 which lead from the chamber 12 within the said valve. This valve is preferably made of glass and is adapted to seat closely in the downwardly contracted portion of the bore of the bottle neck. The chamber 12 formed in the said valve element is of inverted conical shape. In practice the bottle is filled before the valve 10 is placed in the neck thereof. I also provide in addition to the valve 10, a sleeve 13 which may be made of any suitable material which is adapted to fit in the mouth 9 of the bottle, has a bead or flange 1 1, to bear on the upper side of the mouth of the bottle, and also has its lower portion 15 tapered downwardly as shown. This downwardly tapered portion of the sleeve is provided with a series of radially disposed inclined spring locking arms 16, which when the sleeve is placed in the mouth of the bottle snap into the groove 8, and thereby lock the sleeve to the bottle so that neither the sleeve nor the valve can be withdrawn. The cork or stopper 17 is placed in the sleeve. When the cork has been withdrawn and the bottle tilted to pour the contents thereof the valve 10 becomes unseated from the bore of the neck and engages the resilient arms 16' whereby the bottom of the chamber 12 is spaced from the lower end of the sleeve 18 so that the contents of the bottle can be poured from the bottle, through the openings 11 of the valve and also through the bore of the sleeve. Any attempt to refill the bottle causes the valve 10 to become seated in the contracted portion of the bore of the neck so as to close the entrance to the bottle.
WVhile I have herein shown and described what I now consider a preferred embodiment of my invention I would have it understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a bottle having a tubular neck and a chamber formed in the upper end of the bore of the neck, said neck also having an exterior annular flange encircling the mouth thereof, of a substantially conical-shaped hollow valve member arranged in the lower smaller portion of the neck bore and longitudinally movable therein, and a sleeve arranged in the mouth of the bottle and projecting into the chamber thereof, the upper end of said sleeve being turned over and closely engaging the flange around the mouth of the bottle, said sleeve tapering at its lower end and extending into the upper end of said conical valve member, said sleeve carrying resilient arms project- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my ing radially therefrom and engaging with signature 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
