BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Application filed April 13, 1912. Serial No. 690,559.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM TAPPEN- DEN and CHARLES ScHwARz, citizens of the United States, residing at I-Iornell, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
One of the principal objects of the invention is the provision of a simple andeliicient device of this character which will effectively prevent the refilling of the bottle and wherein the stopper when once in place presents no surface or projection whereby the same may be removed from the neck.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the stopper when seated will be flush with the top of the neck and will practically close the neck at this point, the pouring opening being arranged within the neck below the top thereof.
Further objectsof the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the stopper removed from the bottle neck.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents an ordinary bottle having a neck 2 preferably machine formed so as to be slightly tapered or gradually decreasing in diameter from its upper portion to the connection thereof with the body. The side of the neck is provided with a pouring opening 3 Whose coaction with the stopper will be more'fully disclosed hereinafter. The interior of the neck is as shown provided with a relatively high pitched thread or spiral groove 4 which is engaged by a lug or projection 5 carried upon the body of the stopper adjacent the upper portion of its taper, stopper and the neck at the top thereof being allowed for a vent.
The stopper comprises a practically cylindrical body having a ball receiving recess formed in its lower end which is enlarged and the small opening between the j to receive the cap 7 having the valve seat 8 formed thereon to receive the ball valve 9 which is arranged to move within the recess 6. The outer walls of this cap taper to conform with the sides of the stopper as shown and when in place, closely fit the inner walls of the neck. The upper portion of the stopper is made to closely fit the bottle neck and intermediate said portion and the tapering portion the body is provided with an annular channel 10 which alines with the opening 3 formed in the bottle neck. EX- tending inwardly from the lower portion of the annular channel or groove 10 are suitable ports 11 which communicate with the valve recess, the closing cap being also provided with a central port 12 which makes the communication between the bottle and the port 3 complete except as such communication is interrupted by the operation of the valve. Preferably the stopper is provided with an operating button 13 projecting above its neck and adapted to be broken off when the stopper is screwed down into the neck. In order to accomplish this the neck which sup.- ports the button is preferably provided with a weakening groove which adjoins the upper portion of the stopper.
We claim In a non-refillable bottle the combination with a bottle neck having a port in its side, said bottle neck having an internal spiral groove, of a stopper comprising a body having a central recess and an annular groove, with ports extending from the recess to the groove, said ports adapted to form communication with the port in the neck, a valve arranged in the recess, a valve seat member threaded into the body and having a central channel adapted to be closed by the valve, a lug on the body to engage the spiral groove,
and a turning button frangibly connected to \VILLIAM T-APPENDEN. CHARLES SCHVVARZ.
