BOTTLE-PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,596, dated February 8, 1898.

Be it known that I, J OHN LOUIS ELsAss, a

resident of Ohillicothe, in the county of Ross.

and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in bottle-protectors, and more particularly to protectors for, nursing-bottles and the like, the object of the invention being to provide a cheap and neat-appearing device that will preclude all liability of breaking a nursingbottle when same is dropped.

With this object in view the invention con sists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing my improved device placed upon a nursing-bottle. Fig. 2 is a view of same detached. Fig. 3 is a detail, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section.

A represents my improved protector, which I consists of a frame composed of spring-Wire and provided with a base 1, composed of a piece of spring-wire 2, bent into elliptical shape and provided with two cross-pieces 3 3. To the base 1 four (more or less) upright wires 4. are secured, said upright wires being bent or indented, as at 5, to form bearingpoints for the device against the nursingbottle B. The uprights are bent or curved outwardly at their upper ends to form hooks or catches 5 for the reception of a ring 6, approximately similar in diameter to the diameter of the neck of the bottle. An elliptical-shaped reinforcement 7 is provided about midway between the ends of the upright wires 4: and secured thereto. Said reinforcement is bent or indented, as at 8, to form bearingpoints for .the intermediate portion of the frame against the bottle. Where the upright wires join the reinforcement I prefer to employ a device or coupling, such as shown in Fig. 3. This consists of a single piece of metal bent to form two collars 9 9, both adapted to be secured on the same wire, and an intermediate portion 10, bent to receive the other wire and secure same at right'angles to the first-mentioned wire. Solder may be placed in this fastening device to more securely hold same in place.

It is to be understood that I- do not limit myself to the precise form of locking device, but consider myself at liberty to employ any approved means for securing the Wires to gether.

When it is desired to place my improved safety device or protector upon a bottle, it is simply necessary to remove the ring 6, when the upright wires 4 will spring outward and allow the bottle to be placed. therein. The ring can then be passed over the neck of the bottle and secured around the hook-shaped ends 5 of the upright wires 4. When the bottle is thus protected by the frame, it will be practically impossible for the bottle to break should it fall upon the ground ornloor, as the spring-wires of the frame will prevent contact of the bottle with the floor and will also take up most of the jar which would otherwise result.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement'of parts herein shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and

hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details herein shown and described; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As an article of manufacture, a bottle cage or protector constructed to receive the bottle from its top and envelop and guard it upon all sides, said cage or protector having an arched wire bottom upon the crest of which the bottle rests.
