SHOCKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,637, dated September 13, 1898.
Application filed November 5 1897. Serial No. 657,554. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDDIE ROWE POWELL, of Hustonville, in the county of Lincoln and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shocking Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in racks or frames for supporting sugar-cane, corn, hemp, &c., when put in shocks.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which will be capable of being easily constructed, strong and durable, and serve to hold a shock in place as against danger of being blown down.
The invention Will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing one of my improved supporting-frames. Fig. 2 ,is an enlarged sectional detail view showing the manner in which the bars of the frame are secured together.
Referring to the drawings, A A designate two bars arranged in the form of an X, each bar having its lower end pointed, so as to be capable of being easily inserted in the ground. These two bars are united together by a wire nail a, which is driven through the overlapping portions of said bars. Its projecting end is then bent in such manner that while its extreme end is countersunk into the outer face of bar A its body portion will form a loop a. This loop is designed to receive a wire ring which encircles a third bar 13. This latter bar rests in the crotch of the bars A A. The ring a is positioned against the nail a before the latter is fully bent-that is, before its extreme end is driven into the face of bar A. In this way the three bars are firmly united together. The lower end of bar .B is pointed similar to bars A A, so as to insure the frame being properly supported and secured as against slipping.
The advantages of my invention are at once apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and it will be specially observed that I have provided an extremely simple and inexpensive form of fastener for uniting together the several bars c0nstituting the frame.
I claim as my invention- 1. A frame of the character herein described composed of two bars in the form of an X, a fastener uniting said bars, having at one end a loop, and a third bar supported by said former bars and having a ring extended through said loop, substantially as set forth.
2. A frame of the character herein described comprising two bars in the form of an X, a nail uniting said bars having a looped portion, the extreme end of said nail being countersunk in the face of one of said bars, a third bar resting in the crotch of said former bars, and a ring encircling said third bar and extended through the loop formed by said nail, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDDIE ROWE POWELL. Witnesses:
J. W. HOOKER, A. B. O. DINWIDDIE.
