UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
ARTHUR J. MORRILL AND LUKE W. NORTHF IELD, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MIN- NESOTA; SAID MORRILL ASSIGNOR TO SAID NORTHFIELD.
' MILK-PAIL s1; PPORLIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,220, dated May 20, 1902. Applicationfiled December 16, 1901I Serial No. 86,126. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHURJ. MORRILL and LUKE W. NORTHFIELD, citizens of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin andState of Minnesota, v have jointly invented certain new and useful tate to its sides and out of-the way when not in use. I
Stated in a general way, the improvements consist in combining with the pail and ears of suitable form suitable pail-supporters adapted to swing from and cooperate with the ears and pail-top and normally depend at the sides of the pail and to be lifted to positions approximately horizontal and at right angles thereto for supporting the pail on the knees while in use. t
Our improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section'of a pail provided with the improvements. Fig. 2 shows a front elevation, partly sectional, of a portion of the pail, one of its ears, and one of the supporting devices. Fig.3 shows the same parts as Fig. 2,'viewed from a position nearly, at a right angle to and from the left of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a plan View of the;
same parts. I
In the drawings, 1 designates a pail, 2 its bail, and3 the ears towhich the bail is connected through-openings in the usual way. Each ear 3 has its opposite edges cut away at about theilevel of the top bead 4 of the pail to form sockets 5'for receiving the pailsupporters. These supporters or pail-hold -ers 6 are preferably made of wire and comprise a main or outer portion 7, formed of parallel branches looped or connected at their outer ends, as at 8, and an inner portion 9, that is bent downward at nearly a right angle to thetmain portion 7. In normal posi= tion the supporter hangs at the side of the pail, as indicated in-Fig. 1, its bent portion 9 engaging the middle portion of the ear 3 and thertop of the pail. When raised to approximately horizontal position, the bent portion 9 bears against the inner 'edgeof the bead 4 or top of thepail, the under surfaces of the stems of the main portion .7- resting on the top of the bead orirrim 0f the pail and their upper surfaces bearing againstthe top "walls or shoulders of the sockets 5 in the ears,
and are thereby locked against further upward movement. Inthis position the supporters serve efticiently to sustain the pail between the knees or other objects they may be made to rest upon. W hen-the pail is lifted, the supporters gravitate to their normal positions at the sides of the pail, as indicated in Fig. 1. v
. Having described vour invention, 'what we claim, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent,
1s- The combination with a pail and its ears, the ears having their edges suitably recessed; of pail-supporters, comprising body portions extending'outward from the ears'and down: wardly-bent portions extending inward from the ears, arranged to engage the ears in said recesses and to bear upon the top portion of the pail, substantially as set forth.
I In testimony whereof we havehereunto set .our hands this 6th day of December, 1901'.
In presence of-- v FRANK H. CASTNER, HENRY BEDDoW.
