NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 29,
Application filed May 1, 191-7.. Serialilo. 165,771.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. CnDER- VALL, citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of WVinnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bottles and more particularly in a bottle of the non-refillable type. v
The primary object of the invention is to rovide a bottle having a stopper which automatically locks itself to the'neck of the bottle when once inserted therein, and therefore cannot be removed without mutilating the same to such an extent as to preclude its replacement and is thus adapted to render exceeding difficult the sealing of the bottle for the second time.
A further object is to provide means for locking the stopper in the bottle and a pair of cutting members to free the cork from the locking means.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description and accompanying drawings. In which drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through a bottle neck and showing the stopper in position.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the stopper removed.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the bottle neck and stopper.
Fig. 5 is a view of one of the cutting members.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the neck of my improved bottle, which is internally enlarged to provide an annular stopper seat 2. At a suitable distance above the seat 2 the inner face of the neck is recessed in a flaring manner to provide the overhanging shoulder 4. The outer face of the neck opposite the recessed portion therein is enlarged as indicated at 5 to strengthen the neck at this point. The stopper is formed in two parts, including a cork and a holder or locking attachment by means of which the cork is securely fastened in the bottle. The holder or locking attachment comprises a circular or cylindrical locking member .6 having a plurality of tongues 7 struck therefrom and extending upwardly at an angle thereto. A second cylinder 8 is adapted to be snugly received in the cylindrical member '6 and covers the opening formed in the latter adjacent the tongue 7. The numeral 9 indicates a cover or plate which is provided with an upwardly extending marginal flange 10 and is received in the upper endv of the cylinder .8 in such a manner that the upper edge of the flange is flush with the end of the cylinder. The cylindrical member 6 is somewhat longer than the cylinder 8 and has its lower end folded inwardly to embrace the smaller cylinder and the upper end of the cylinder is folded inwardly to embrace the flange 7 and holds the cover in position. From' the foregoing it will be seen that the holder is in the form of an inverted cup and has its cover 9 provided with slots positioned at diametrically opposite points, thereon and immediately adjacent the folded upper end of the cylinder 6.
A pair of cutters l2 and 13 are provided, each of which includes a triangular body portion 15 and an extension 17. The cutters 12 and 13 have their body portions curved to form a half circle in order'to embrace the opposite side of the cork 18 and the converging sides of the said body portion may be beveled to provide sharpened cutting edges for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
In assembling the parts, the cutters 12 and 13 are associated with opposite sides of the cork as stated and the said cork is then inserted in the holder in such a manner that the extensions 17 project through slots 11 formed in the cover 9, the expansive action of the cork being sufiicient to hold the parts together. The holder or looking attachment is then inserted in the neck of the bottle and rests upon the seat 2 formed therein. In this position, the locking tongues 7 are engaged beneath the shoulder 4 to lock the stopper in the bottle and the plate 9 prevents removal of the cork. I
To remove the cork the projecting end 17, of the cutters are seized with any suitable tool and pulled upwardly, the sharp ened and convergent sides of said cutters being adapted to out through and sever the top 9 from the cylinder 6 in order to permit the cork to be extracted in the OTC? nary way.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a bottle neck having a seat formed therein and provided with a recess adjacent said seat, of a cylindrical locking member positioned on said seat and having tongues engaged with said recess, a cork positioned in said cylindrical member, a fastening plate associated with the upper end of said locking member, and a plurality of cutters arranged to embrace said cork and positioned within said locking member beneath said fastening plate.
2. The combination with a bottle neck having a seat formed therein and provided with a recess adjacent said seat, of a cylindrical member positioned on said seat and having tongues engaged with said recess, a
. second cylinder positioned within said locking member, a plate positioned in the upper end of said second cylinder and equipped with a marginal flange, means for fastening said plate in position and a stopper posi tinned beneath said plate.
3. The combination with a bottle neck, having a seat formed therein and provided with a recess, of a stopper supported on said seat, a cylindrical locking member surrounding said stopper and having tongues engaged with said recess, a locking plate associated with the upper end of said locking member and engaging said stopper, and a air of cutters arran 'ed below said lockin plate.
4. The combination with a bottle neck having a seat formed therein and provided with a recess, of a cylindrical locking member positioned on said seat and having tongues engaged in said recess, a stopper positioned within said cylindrical member, a plate secured to the upper end of said locking memher and engaging said stopper, a pair of cutting members arranged on opposite sides of sald stopper and equipped with pro ectlons adapted to extend through slots formed in said plate.
5. The combination with a bottle neck having a seat formed therein and provided with a recess adjacent said seat, of a cylindrical locking member supported on said seat and having locking engagement with said recess, a plate closing the upper end of said member and provided with spaced openings, a stopper positioned beneath said plate, and cutters engaging said stopper and provided with extensions projecting upwardly through the openings in said plate.
6. The combination with a bottle neck having a seat formed therein, of a stopper positioned on said seat, a locking member inelosing said stopper 2111C- having locking engagement with said neck, and cutting members arranged. in a position to destroy said locking member to permit the removal of the stopper.
7. The combination with a bottle neck.
extension adapted to pass through one of the openings in the plate.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
