To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MILTON NrLns,-a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cathay, in the county of Wells and State of North Dakota have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bottles, being especially directed to means for sealing the neck thereof, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive sealing device which may be conveniently applied, one which will be permanently fixed in place for effectually closing the bottle, and one which precludes fraudulent removal of the contents of the bottle without detection.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and coinbination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle neck equipped with a sealing device embodying the invention and showing the sealing member detached. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing the sealing member applied and secured in place. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating a modilied form of sealing member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bottle of usual form having a neck 2 in which, as seen in Figs. 1. and 2, there is seated a cork stopper 3, there being formed on the upper edge of the neck around its mouth a plurality of upwardly projecting engaging members or lugs l.
Adapted for application over the mouth of the bottle is a part in the form of a sealing member or disk 5 composed of metal or other appropriate material and preferably of the form shown having a plurality of openings or perforations 6 disposed to register with the lugs 4 and for the reception of the latter, it being noted in this connection that the lugs are of a sufficient length to project slightly above the member 5 when seated in place.
In practice, after the bottle has been filled and the cork 3 introduced the member 5 is seated in place for closing the mouth above the cork and with the lugs 4 projecting upwardly through the corresponding opening 6, after which the upper ends of the lugs are reheated in any suitable manner and finally upset, by means of an appropriate instrument, onto the memher 5 for forming integral retaining heads 7. It will be observed that under this arrangement the stopper cannot be withdrawn to remove the contents of the bottle except by previously removing the sealing member 5, the removal of which will necessitate breaking the retaining lugs 4, whereby the fact of the bottle having been opened will be fully advertised.
In Fig. 3 there is illustrated a slightly modified form of device in which the neck 2 is provided at a point suitably remote from its upper end or mouth With an internal marginal shoulder 8 forming a seat for a cork. or other packing disk 9 arranged at the lower end of the stopper 10, which in this instance has formed integral therewith a sealing part in the form of a flange 5 adapted to seat on the upper end of the neck and provided with openings to receive the engaging lugs 4, as in the form of device above described, it being understood that prior to seating the stopper in place the cork packing disk 9 is arranged in the neck on the shoulder 8 and will, when the stopper is fitted in the neck, form a liquid-tight joint between the parts. After the stopper has been arranged in place, the lugs 4 are upset in the manner and for the purpose heretofore explained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A bottle having a neck provided with an unobstructed discharge mouth, projecting retaining lugs formed on the upper edge of the neck around said mouth, a stopper made to fit in the neck, and a part adapted to seat on the mouth and having openings to receive said lugs, the latter being upset to form heads for securing the said part in place.
2. A bottle having a neck provided with an unobstructed discharge mouth and having an inner marginal shoulder, projecting retaining lugs formed on the upper edge of the neck around said mouth, a packing disk seated on the shoulder within the neck, a stopper formed to fit in the neck and hear at its lower end on said disk, and a part carried by the stopper and adapted to seat on the upper end of the mouth and having openings to receive said lugs, the latter being upset to form heads for securing the said part in place.
