Specification of Letters Patent.
Petented March 26,19Ci'2,
Application filed March 1%,1906. Serial No. 306,951;
. toothowder and the like will he fl-lltfllllitiilt'z ally c osed, while readily permitting the withdrawal of a small quantity of the powder when desired.
With these ends in view this invention consists i the details of construction and combination f elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention up )crteins may understand how to make em use the some, the
construction and operation will now be doscrihcid in detail, referring to the accompany-- ing drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of :1 toolhpowder can having my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2, at similar view of a. portion of the can, showing the cap in its doprcsscd'position for the withdrawal oi a portion of the powder; Fig. 3, a section at the line w ;i: of Fig. 2 Fig. 4, a view showing the lllitlllill in which the powder is withdrawn; and Fig. 5, it view illustrating my improvementapplied. to a bottle.
In carrying out my invention hero cmhodicd, A represents a can for containing tooth-powder or the like, having the neck B, in which is formed a vertical depression (X The upper portion. of this neck has an oll'set D, through which is formed a hole E.
F represents the on ,which is fitted to slide upon the neck and a o has a vertical depres sion G, fitting in the depression C, so as to prevent tho cnp revolving, while permitting it to slide up and down after the manner of a, spline. The lower end of the cup is inturned, as indicated at H, so as to abut against the under side of the offset D, and thus limit the upward movement thereof. This can has a hole i formed therein, corresponsing to the hole E formed in the neck, and 5 spring J is interposed between the top of neck and the top of the cap, so to normally force the hitter upward, thus keeping theholes n and l: out of ulinement, thereby closing the con against the Withdrawal of its contents.
In practice when it desired to withdraw a portion or the contents of the can it is only necesserylto tip the some to the spproxiniete posi ion shown in Fig. 4 end depress the can against thezrction of the sprin or the a v I D holes E and i in olinement, when it next the powder, which will then be in til: the can, will flow through these holes, end when a su'lhcient amount of the powde withdrawn the cap is released, when the spring will he forced. outward, thus closing the o enings.
This seine device may be applied to a. hot-- tie, its shown in Fig. 5, in hichB resents :in extended neck, .whichiis secure: in the cork K hy inee-nsof thebead L and the flared lower edge ofthenecln M, and in rec-tics l prcfcrthu-t' the-neck of the bottle roll he recesscil, so as to receive the cork and provide a shoulder N, u )on: which the lower end of the neck see-to thus more effectually Withstanding the strain of the pressure necessary to depress the cap without disloceting the cork. i
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the details or" construction here shown, as verious modifications might be made without departing from thc spirit--of.my invention, thcgist 'of which rests in the broad idea of providing it sliding cap spring-actuated in one direction;
Having thus fully described my invention,
- between the cap and the closed end of the neck so as to raise said cap and cause the inturned edge part to abut againstthe lower margin of the offset, and an aperture in the '5. flange of the cap adapted to register with the aperture in the offset part when the cap is depressed.
I n testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I DANIEL WEBSTER, JR.
