SCREW TOP FOR OIL AND OTHER CANS.
No. 316,001. Patented Apr. 21, 1885;
WITNESSES NITED STATES PATENT rrrce.
J. FRANK BLY AND CLARENCE R. CIPPERLY, OF MAYVILLE, NEW YORK.
SCREW-TOP FOR OIL AND OTHER CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,001, dated April'zl, 1885.
Application filed December 20, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J. FRANK BLY and CLARENCE B. CIPPERLY, both citizens of the United States, residing at Mayville, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Tops for Oil or otherv screw-caps to oil or other cans in such manner that, while said caps may be readily screwed on or off, they will remain attached to the cans at all times, thus preventing the loss or misplacement of the same; and our improvements consist, essentially, of a retaining-strip of metal, the one or lower end of which is pivoted to the body of the can, while the opposite or upper end is pivotally secured to a stud or post upon the top of the screw-cap, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our improvements; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 a detail View.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
In carrying out our invention the ordinary screw-cap, A, is provided with a stud or post, a, which is attached to the upper central portion of 'said cap by solder or other suitable means, said stud or post being provided at its upper end with a head or cap, I), to hold the upper end of the metallic strip B upon the post. This retaining-strip B may be formed of a flat strip of metal or from stout Wire, as may be deemed most preferable, and is provided with a loop or opening, 0, at each end, as fully shown in Fig. 8. The loop or opening 0 at the upper end of the strip B fits oven the top of the stud or post a, beneath the cap b, while the loop or opening 0 at the bottom of said strip is connected to the wire loop d, secured to the upper part of the can 0, as shown. gles at or about its center, to project over the center of the screw-cap A, although it may be curved, if deemed preferable.
By means of our improvements the screwcap is securely attached to the body of the can at all times, but may be readily screwed on or off the top of the same at will, the stud or post a readily turning in either direction within the loop or opening 0 of the retainingstrip B. The improvement is readily attached to the ordinary screw-caps by means of solder, no change of the construction of the cans or screw-caps being necessary.
- Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and useful 1. The means herein described for securing screw-caps to cans, consisting of the bent metallic strip B, having loops or openings 0, the lower oneof which engages with the loop d of the can C, While the upper one is pivotally adjusted upon the stud or post a, beneath the flange or head b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The retaining-strip B, provided with a loop or opening, 0, at each end, in combination with the loop d of the can C and the post at, having flange or head b, upon the screwcap A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof \ve affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
J. FRANK BLY. CLARENCE R. CIPPERLY.
Witnesses:
