UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC L. BOOK, OF MOOERS, NEW YORK.
SHIPPING-PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,539, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed $eptcn1her 14, 1888. Serial No. 285,375. (No model.)
T0 uZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC L. ROCK, of Mooers, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shipping-Packages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawin q'sfforming' a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the fastening-lever; and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on line 50 a, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
The object. of my invention is to provide a simple, effective, and inexpensive i'asten er for the covers of butter-tubs, pails, and other packages.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The pail or package A is made of any desired form and proportions. To one side of the pail is pivotally connected the square loop B, and to the opposite side of the pail is pivotally connected the square loop C, upon the free end of which turns the cam-lever D. The body of the cam-lever D is arranged eceentrieally with reference to the end of the loop.
The cover E is provided with a rabbet for receiving the rim of the pail A, and is furnished with a cleat, F, which extends across the cover and projects beyond the edge thereof. The end a oi the cleat F is designed to receive the square loop B, and the end (l of the said cleat is beveled on its upper surface and adapted to receive the loop C and the fastening-lever D.
After the fastener is slipped over the end of the eleat F, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the lever D is turned over toward the center of the cover E, as shown in full lines, causing the larger part of the lever to bear firmly upon the cleat and thus hold the cover in its place on the pail. To the cleat F is attached an ordinary handle, G. The pail or package is preferably made of tin and the cover of wood, the cleat being nailed to the top of the cover.
Having thus described my invention, I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the pail A, having opposite vertically-swimging loops B (l, and the lever D, pivoting 011 the upper end of loop C, between its sides, and having its pivoted end rounded and enlarged on its lower face to form a cam, of the cover E, having a eleat projcctin beyond its sides to enter the loop B at one end and projecting at its opposite end through the loop C and under the lower or cam face of the said lever, substantially as set forth.
ISAAC L. ROCK.
