HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,812, dated June 10, 1890.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. LAFLEUR, of. the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to admit of the lids of boxes, crates, and chests being thrown backward until they come in contact and in alignment with the box proper, and that without placing any strain on the hinges.

The said invention consists in a peculiar construction of the hinge andjn the manner of applying it to the lid and the upper edge of the box, as will hereinafter fully appear.

In the description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is an edge View of a part of a box and lid, together with the improved hinge, and Fig. 2 a rear View of the same; Fig. 3 is an under side view of the portion of the lid shown in Figs. 1 and 2, illustrating the manner of cutting the edge of the lid for the reception of the hinge. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, except that the lid is shown as being turned back, so as to be in alignment with the box proper. Fig. 5 is a modification of the invention, illustrating a dilferent manner of applying the hinge to the box.

Referring to Figs. l to 4, inclusive, of the drawings, A and B represent, respectively, a portion of the box and a fragment of the lid.

0 is the hinge formed of the straps a and b, the former applied to the outside of the box and the latter to the under side of the lid. The straps a and b are united so as to form a joint 0 by means of the pin d, in the usual manner. It will be seen that the strap 1), as it leaves the joint 0, extends downward at an angle of about thirty degrees until it reaches the under side of the lid, when it continues in a line parallelwith it. The inclined or angular portion of the strap 1) rests in a tapering notch or recess 6. (Shown particularly in Fig. 3.) The other strap a of the hinge is straight throughout its length and is secured to the outside of the box.

It is preferred to form the hinge so that the joint will be below the upper surface of the lid and not project above it. With this arrangementthe boxes or crates may be stacked 'or placed one upon another without the hinge of one defacing the box immediately above it.

In Fig. 5 the edges of the lid and box are mitered instead of being square and lapped, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

I claim as my invention The box-side A and the straight strap a, secured to the outer su r'face thereof, combined with the lid B, having a tapering recess e, formed in its under side at the edge thereof, a strap 12, secured to the under side of the lid and bent to fit in the recess 6, each strap being extended beyond the edge of the body to which it is attached,and the extended portions of the straps joined together by a pivotal connection below the upper surface of the lid, substantially as specified.
