A. FRESCHL.

BURIAL CASE.
No. 497,44 Patented Ma m, 1 893.
NITED TATES ALFRED FRESOHL, or OSHKOSH, wISooNSIN.
BUIRIAL-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,446, dated May 16, 1893.
I Application filed January 24,1893. Serial No. 459,575. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED FRESCHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding lids or face. plates for burial cases, and its objects are, first, to dispense with the usual attaching hinges which are required to be put on before the burial case is covered, and which render it necessary to remove the cloth covering when from any cause the hinge is broken or damaged, when it is desired to replace the broken or damaged hinge by a new one; secondly, to provide the two sections of the lid with flexible joints which, when the lid is folded b will not expose a white margin from the side.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top View of a burial case, and Fig. 2 atrans- Verse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the cove and the flexible lid of the burial case, the lid be ing shown slid or thrown back.
A in the drawings represents the body or shell of the case, B the cove, O the glass, and D, D the two sections or parts of the lid, each part being attached to the cove by means of straps or cords e, e, which latter are Socured by their ends to the under side of the lid on each end thereof, the straps or cords extending transversely across the sections of the lid from its outer edges to near the center of the parts D, D and passed through staple eyes 0, c secured in the upper edge of the cove so as to permit the straps to pass through the staple eyes and allow the two sections or parts of the lid to slide down and rest upon the cove as shown in Fig. 3. It is preferable that the straps or cords e, e be of flexible material although wire maybe employed. Each section or part D, D of the lid is provided with a flexible joint formed preferably of triangular strips 1', i and fastened to the parts we, nof the sections D, D by means of canvas glued to the under side of the lid.
These flexible joints are concealed by cloth covering on the outside of the lid and lining on the under side thereof.
The manner of attaching the lid is adapted to different styles of lids, the great utility being that it can be applied to a burial case after the latter has been covered, a result not attainable in hinge connections of ordinary construction, as in all hinges or connections heretofore devised they must be attached before the covering is put on. A further great ad vantage of my sliding connection is that it is not necessary to remove the covering to replace a hinge in the event of the connection being broken or damaged as is the case with hinge connections heretofore devised.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination Withaburial case, of a lid opening longitudinally at the center of the case and attached to the cove of the case at each side by means of straps or cords extending laterally beneath the lid and passed through staples or eyes in the cove, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a burial case, of a lid formed of two sections D, D, each section being provided with a flexible joint formed of approximatelytriangular shaped pieces which are held together by a strip fastened on the under side of the lid, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a burial case of a lid formed of two longitudinal sections which open at the center of the case and are attached by their outer side edges to the cove by means of straps or cords which extendlaterally beneath the lid and pass through staples or eyes in the cove, the said sections of the lid being provided with flexible joints intermediate their side edges, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED FRESOHL. WVitnesses:
JAS. I-I. DoNNELLY, WM. A. PHILLIPS.
