0. LENFANT. BOOK COVER Patented May 5 ANDREW e GRAHAM PHOTO-m0 WASHINGTON M2.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. CHARLES LENFANT, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,727, dated May 5,1896. Application filed January 3,1896. Serial No. 574,187. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES LENFANT, a citizen of the German Empire, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of book-covers to be used in binding Bibles, prayer and other books, whereby the cover is produced in a neat and cheap manner; and the invention consists, first, of a cover for books comprising an exterior portion; a lining provided with a central opening, connecting back-strips and joints at both sides of the opening, said lining being made of approximately the same size as the cover, and means for connecting the edges of the exterior portion with the lining, and, secondly, of a lining for book-covers provided with a central opening, connecting back-strips and joints at both sides of said opening, all made in one integral piece, as hereinafter fully described and then particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of a one-piece lining used in connection with my improved cover for Bibles and other books. Fig. 2 is also a plan view of a lining made of two sections and connected at the center. Figs. 3, a, 5, and 6 are enlarged sectional views of one of the corners of the cover, showing the different methods of connecting the lining with the exterior portion of the cover. Fig. 7 is a plan view of a finished cover ready to be applied to the book; and S is a vertical longitudinal section on line 8 S, Fig. '7.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre; sponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the exterior part of the cover, and B the lining of the same. The exterior portion A is made of any suitable leather, rounded off at the corners and cut to shape, by means of dies, according to the size of the book to be bound. The lining B is made of a lighter quality of leather, and instead of being made of four portions, as heretofoi'e-namely, of two side portions and two connecting baek-strips-it is preferably made in. one integral piece, which is cut at one operation by suitable dies with an oblong opening at the center, connecting-strips d d, and flanges or joints 1) at the inner edges of the side portions, said joints being bent up so as to form the connection with the book in the usual manner. In place of making the lining in one integral piece it may also be made in two sections, in which the connecting back-strips d d at the upper and lower ends of the sections overlap each other, as shown in Fig. 2. This two-piece lining Bis used when smaller pieces of leather have to be worked up. The lining l) is also made rounded off at the corners and pasted to the exterior portion of the cover, a suitable layer of felt f or other suitable textile fabric being interposed between each halflining and the outer portion, so as to impart a certain thickness or body to the cover. The outer edges of the lining B are connected with the edges of the exterior portion A of the cover, either by cementing them together by a suitable cement, as shown in Fig. 3, orby connecting them by a separate edge-binding e, of leather, as shown in Fig. 4:, or by provid ing the exterior portion with a flange e, which is turned inwardly over the lining, glued thereto, and then worked down by the creasing-tool, as shown in Fig. or the lining B is provided with a flange e that overlaps the outer portion, which flange is then glued and worked down by the creasing-tool in the usual manner, asshown in Fig. 6 or any other connection between the outer portion and the lining can be made. lVhen the outer portion and lining are connected by cement, the edge has to be colored and polished after the connection of the lining with the exterior portion has been made.
lVhen the cover is completed, the book is inserted by pasting the joints to the sides of the same in the usual manner, the outer edge of the cover lapping then over the book and imparting the desired well-known finish to the same.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cover for books, consisting of an exterior portion, a lining provided with a central opening, connecting back-strips and joints at both sides of the opening, said lining being made of approximately the same size as the cover, and means for connecting the edges of the exterior portion with the lining, snb- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as stantially as set forth. my invention I have signed my name in pres- 2.
