Application filed December This invention relates to luggage carriers and more especially to bat boxes.

In hat boxes now offered commercially a collar is provided within the box, to which collar is sewed the binding and the lining is glued to the binding. The stay for limiting the swing of the cover is separately attached to the collar generally by riveting. With this type of construction it is neces sary first to attach the binding to the collar and mount it in the box after which the lining is separately arranged within. the box and glued to the binding, the majority of the operations being performed within the Where the lining is glued to the binder the surface becomes rough when the glue hardens, giving it an undesirable finish both as to appearance and touch.

An object of this invention is a hat box in which the collar, binding stay and lining are assembled exterior of the box without glue, thereby materially reducing the labor of assembling, obviating the rough juncture between the lining and binding and also producing a more serviceable and attractive device.

lhis object is attained by sewing simultaneously to one edge of the collar the lining and bin ding and also at the same time stitching to the collar one end of the stay. The collar with the binding, lining and stay stitched thereto is then mounted within the box and suitably attached thereto, usually by gluing.

Other objects and features of this inven tion will become apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hat bax embodying the invention,

The box body is designated by 10 and the cover which is hinged to the box is designated by 11. Within the box is provided 22, 1925 Serial No. 76,944.

13. Lining 15 extends from the binding to the bottom of the box. The lining and binding are simultaneously stitched, as at 16, to the collar at a point just beyond the strip 13. A stay 17 for limiting the swing of the cover 11 has one end interposed be tween the lining and binding and is sewed to the collar 12 by the same stitching as the lining and binding.

Fig. 3 shows in detail the above described arrangement. In this figure the lining is shown turned up in the position it is arranged while the stitching operation is being performed. The strip 13 spaces the inner surface of the binding slightly so that when the lining is turned down into normal position the double thickness thereof renders its surface substantially co-extensive with that of the'binding, thereby giving a smooth finish to the interior of the After the lining, binding and stay have been sewed to the-collar 12, the latter is placed within the box and held in position in any suitable manner such as by gluing. The lining 15 is positioned around the inner surface of the box and its lower end fastened to the bottom of the box by gluing or in some other suitable mannerafter which the lining for the bottom of the box is put in. lVith this arrangement practically all of the operations affecting the lining, binding and stay are performed before these elements are put in the box, thereby making it easier for the operator and reducing the time consumed in the operations. Moreover a much more serviceable and attractive juncture between the lining and binding is produced, the usual rough surface at the juncture being entirely obviated.

It is understood of course that various modifications may be made in the structural features of the device above described without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A hat box comprising a body having a cover hinged thereto, a collar of stiff material arranged within said body in contact with the inner periphery thereof, said collar being of greater width. than the depth of said body whereby one edge of the collar projects beyond the edge of said body, a binding member covering that part of the collar projecting beyond said body, and a lining extending "from said binding member to the bottom of said body and being tastened thereto, both edges of said binding member and the upper edge of said lining being jointly stitched to said collar.

2. In a device of the character described, a collar having a thin strip fastened thereto near one edge, a binding arranged over the edge of said collar and projecting beyond said strip, and a lining, said lining and near one edge, a binding arranged over the edge of said collar and projecting beyond said strip, alining and a stay, said binding, 20

lining and stay being jointly stitched to said collar just below the edge of said strip.
