General Utility Bag Corp, 350 Warren St, Jersey City, NJ.) Filed Dec. 13, 1962, Ser. No. 244,374 4 Claims. (Cl. 190-53) This invention relates to hand luggage and has particular reference to a prefabricated lining construction therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide a prefabricated lining construction corresponding to the formation of the sections of the luggage case and which constitutes a unit for emplacement in the case.
Hand luggage, particularly womens valises and the like are provided with a fabric lining which are affixed to the inner face of the walls of the luggage case by various means such as by fastening elements, by adhesively securing the lining thereto and by securing the edges of the lining under metal bands extending about the edges of the case. But such constructions necessitate the fastening of the lining in the luggage case in sections or in piece by piece which is laborious. In order to overcome the aforesaid objections and to facilitate the emplacement of the lining construction in the luggage case as a unit, the present invention contemplates the production of the lining construction in complete form and to connect the parts thereof for the case sections by a hinged strip so that the complete lining construction may be emplaced and secured in the case sections as a unit without the necessity of using metal fasteners and the like and which leaves the lining flexible and unsecured over the major portions of the side walls of the case so as to enhance the appearance thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lining construction composed of two lining sections conforming to the shape of the inside faces of the luggage case sections respectively and which are connected together by a hinge strip whereby the lining construction constitutes a unit which may be expeditiously emplaced and secured in the luggage case.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lining construction of said character in which each of the lining sections consists of a main wall and peripheral side walls which are provided with a backing underlining the main wall and a backing strip underlining the upper edge portion of the peripheral side walls and with a hinge strip connecting the backing strips whereby the lining construction constitutes a unit adapted to be secured to the luggage case sections by adhesively fastening the backing strip and the backing sheet at the edge thereof against the inside faces of the case sections.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a luggage case having a lining construction embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the lining construction before being emplaced and secured in the luggage case.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged sectional view with parts broken away and taken approximately on line 33 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken approximately on line 44 of FIG. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the lining construction consists of a unit which is produced in complete formation before being emplaced and secured in the luggage case.
The luggage case may be of any desired construction and, as illustrated, includes two case sections 12 and 13,
3,126,077 Patented Mar. 24, 1964 the case section 12 being somewhat deeper than the case section 13 and includes a main wall 14 and top and bottom walls 15 and 16, and end walls 17. The case section 13 similarly includes a main wall 18, top and bottom walls 19 and 20 and end walls 21. The case sections are provided with rigid metal frames 22 and 23 which extend thereabout respectively and are secured thereto in any desired maner in overlying relation with the upper edges of the top and bottom and side walls thereof. The metal frame 22 is formed with an upstanding peripheral flange 24, while the metal frame 23 telescopes within said peripheral flange when the case sections are in closed relation. The case sections are swingably connected together by hinges 25 carried by the bottom walls thereof and the top walls thereof are provided with interengageable latch means 26 and 27 for latching and locking the sections in closed formation.
The lining construction consists of lining sections 29 and 39 which correspond to the formation of and fit within the case sections 12 and 13 respectively. The lining sections are connected together by a hinge strip 31 which extends over the upper edges of the bottom walls 16 and 20 of the case sections in overlying relation with the hinges 25 thereof. The lining section 29 is of a size to fit within the case section 12 and includes a main wall 32, top and bottom walls 33 and 34 and end walls 35 of fabric such as rayon or other materials and which top and bottom and side walls are secured to the main wall 32 by stitching 36 extending peripherally thereabout. A backing 37 of cardboard and the like underlies the main wall 32 which is doubled over the peripheral edge portions thereof and with the stitching 36 extending through the backing and the doubled over portions of the main wall. The top and bottom walls 33 and 34 and end walls 35 of said lining section have a backing strip 38 of cardboard and the like secured thereto peripherally about the upper edge portions thereof by stitching 39.
The lining section 30 is of a size and formation to fit within the case section 13 and includes a main wall 40, top and bottom walls 41 and 42 and end walls 43 of fabric such as silk, rayon or other material and which walls are secured to the main wall by stitching 44 extending peripherally thereabout. A backing 45 of cardboard and the like underlies the main wall 40 which wall is doubled over the peripheral edge portion of the backing 45 and with the stitching 44 extending through the backing and the doubled over portion of the main wall. The top and bottom and end walls of said lining section have a backing strip 46 of cardboard and the like secured thereto peripherally about the upper edge portions thereof by stitching 47.
The hinge strip '31 connecting the lining sections 29 and 3%} consists of a layer of fabric similar to the fabric composing the lining sections and with a lining 49 of cardboard and the like which is secured thereto by stitching 50 and which hinge strip is secured to the bottom walls 34 and 42 by the stitching 39' and 47 which also unite the hinge strip 31 with said backing strips 38 and 46 of the lining sections 29 and 30 respectively. Thus the lining sections 29 and 30 together with the hinge strip 31 constitute a completed lining unit for the case sections of the luggage case. For this purpose, the main walls 32 and 40* of the lining sections are coated with adhesive 51 on the under faces thereof adjacent their peripheral edges which adhesive extends over a portion of the backings thereof. The backing strips 38 and 46 are likewise provided with an adhesive coating 52 over the outer faces thereof. When emplacing the lining sections within the case sections the adhesive coatings 51 are pressed against the main walls of the case sections and the adhesive coatings 52 are pressed against the filler strip 3 53 riveted or otherwise secured to the top and bottom and end walls of said case sections thereby securing the lining construction in the case sections with the hinge strip 31 overlying the hinges connecting the sections together.
The lining section 30 is provided with a flap 54 which is connected at the sides thereof with the main Wall 40 by stitching 44 and at the bottom thereof by stitching 57 so as to form a pocket therewith. The lining section 29 is provided with tying straps 55 which are secured to the main section 32 by the stitching 51. The case section 12 is provided with a handle member 56 which is connected with the top walls thereof in any desired manner.
A prefabricated lining construction is thus provided which is adapted to be conveniently inserted in the luggage case as a unit so as to facilitate the emplacement of the lining construction therein.
While the preferred form of the invention is shown and described herein, it is to be understood that the invention is not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications thereof which fall within the purview of the invention.
