CASE
Filed April 24, 1951 BY @wlnw AGENTSl 'Patented July 29,v 1952 CASE v John Harwood, Walsall, England Application April 24, 1951, Serial No( 222,606 l In Great Britain February 11, 1949 2 Claims.
This invention relates to cases of the kind comprising two side portions connected at adjacent edges by a back portion in a manner similar to the covers and back of a book, the side portions being adapted to be folded one over the other and secured by a slide fastener.
Such cases may be used for containing small articles lsuch as manicure sets or such a case may be used as a writing case or for any other suitable purpose.
Hitherto it has been the practice to secure the exible ends of the fastener elements to the inner surface of the back portion and then to secure over these end portions of the slide elements small panels of leather or other suitable material to make a ne-at finish.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction which Will provide a neater finish to the case and will facilitate the assembly thereof.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a perspective View of a case constructed according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end of a case from the inner side, showing one pair of ends of the fastener element before being secured in place.
Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2, showing one pair of ends of the fastener element secured in place.
Referring to the drawings the sides and back of the case comprise one or more thicknesses of canvas I orsimilar material. Each of the side members is stiifened with a sheet of cardboard 3 or other suitable material, leaving the back portion 2 (Figure 2), flexible or semi-exible, the whole assembly being secured together by glue or like adhesive.
A lining sheet 4 of silk or other suitable material is applied to the inner surface of the assembly, and a single leather shield 5 is then secured to the inner surface over the back portion of the case. An opening 6 is made through the shield 5 and the underlying canvas at or near each end of the shield, and these openings are made by cutting U-shaped slits having diverging sides 1, with the rounded or base portions 8 of the U-shaped openings disposed nearer to the centers of the case than the two sides l.
The slide fastener elements 9 are secured around the edges of the inner surfaces of the case sides by sewing, with the teeth of the elements projecting substantially at right angles to the plane of the said inner surfaces, and the two pairs of iiexible ends I0 are taken through the openings 6 in the shield 5, are placed flat against and secured to the outer surface of the back portion 2 by stitching at II, as seen most clearly in Figure 3, the tongues of material I2 which are produced in cutting the U-shaped slits in the shield 5 and underlying canvas also being pushed through the openings 6 to the outer surface of the back portion of the case.
During assembly the loose ends I0 of the slide fastener members are passed through the openings 6 and pulled upon to eliminate any slackness before securing them by stitching II, the shield 5 providing a rigid pad against which the ends I0 can be pulled, whilst the U-shape form of the edges of the openings 6 ensures that the ends I0 of the fastener elements fold over these edges into the correct position to enable them to be stitched readily in a flat condition, as illustrated in Figure 3.
Finally a cover I3 of leather or other suitable material is applied to the outer surface of the case, being turned over the edges and secured as by stitching at I4 in well-known manner.
Instead of the shield 5 consisting of a single piece of leather or like stiff, semi-stiff or tough material, two separate shield members may be provided, one at each end of the inner surface of the back portion of the case.
In carrying out the invention, manufacture is simplified and made cheaper, whilst the construction provides a strong case of neat inner and outer appearance, particularly as regards the anchorage of the ends of the slide fastener elements.
What I claim then is:
1. -A case of the kind having two side portions, a back portion connecting adjacent edges of said side portions so that they may be folded one over the other and slide fastener elements secured to the free edges of said side portions whereby the case may be closed, a reinforcing shield secured to the inner surface of the back portion, said shield and said back portion being each provided adjacent each end thereof with a coaxial opening the end of each fastener element at each end of the case passing through the opening at that end of the case, the ends of said fastener elements being secured to the outside of the back portion of the case and a cover secured over the outside of the case thereby concealing the ends of the fastener element.
2. A case of the kind having two side portions,
- 3 a. back portion connecting adjacent edges of said side portions so that they may be folded one over the other and slide fastener elements secured to the free edges of said side portions whereby the case may be closed, a reinforcing shield secured to the inner surface of the back portion, said shield and said back portion being each provided adjacent each end thereof with a coaxial: opening, of U-shape, 'the base of .the U projecting 'towards-the centre of the case, the end of each fastener element at each end of the case passing through the opening at that end.
of the case, the fastener elements being folded against the sides of the opening so as to lie hatY against the outside of the back portion v:of the' case, the shield being of tough material whereby the ends of the fastener element 'may be pulled` against it so as to take up any slack in r said REFERENCES CITED The. following references are of record in the file of this patent:
