have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in shoes.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a shoe having a scam in the back thereof whereby the dimensions of the shoe upper may be increased.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a lining of such construction whereby it will adjust itself to the increased dimensions of the upper.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following description and drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a fragmental detail showing the outside of the shoe. Fig. 2 is a fragmental detail showing the inside of the shoe. Fig. 3 is a fragmental top view. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a fragmental perspective of the outside of the shoe showing the seam being severed, and Fig. 6 is a fragmental perspective showing the lining attached to the interior of the shoe.

Considerable difiiculty has been experienced in the past in having the shoe upper snugly fit the ankle. .Very often when purchasing shoes in order to get the proper length and width of the shoe it is necessary to have the buttons moved near to the edge of the upper or farther therefrom. When this is done the appearance of the shoe is marred, as perforations are left in the upper and the shoe never has as neat an appearance with the buttons set very close to the edge. It is to overcome this difficulty that I have perfected my shoe the details of which will be described.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the outer layer of leather of the shoe upper, and 2 the interior lining. A seam is formed in the back of the shoe upper by the stitching 3 and a V-shaped overlapping portion A is formed on the interior of the back of the shoe, as clearly shown in the drawings. Should the shoe too tightly fit the nk e i i 9 13 necessary to out th stitching 8, as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and the V -shaped overlapping portion opens and enlarges the shoe upper.

In Fig. 6 of the drawings, I have shown the lining 5-which is overlapped across the seam, as indicated at 6. The lining is preferably held in folded position by an adhesive, though stitching may be used if desired. By severing the stitching in the upper the lining may be expanded by pulling on the fold and thus partially loosening it from the adhesive. The overlapping portion 6 will open and cover the expanded V-shaped portion of the upper. By constructing a shoe of this character it will be seen that it is not necessary to move the buttons on the shoe and the shoe will maintain its neat appearance. The V-shaped portion formed on the back of the shoe will not mar the appearance thereof in any manner.

Having fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A shoe having an upper provided with a V-shaped fold formed of a surplus of material at the back of the upper; and stitching joining the meeting edges of said fold at the center of the back of said upper.

2. A shoe having an upper provided with a V-shaped fold at the back thereof, formed from a surplus of the lining and the outer material, the meeting edges of the fold of the outer material being secured together independently of the fold of the lining.

3. A shoe having an upper provided with a surplus of material, and a seam formed by gathering the surplus of the material at the back of the shoe.

4. A shoe having an upper provided with a surplus of material, a V-shaped overlapping portion formed from, the surplus of said material, and a seam formed centrally of said V-shaped portion.

5; A shoe having an upper provided with a surplus of material, a severable seam gathering said surplus of material, and an expansible lining covering said surplus of material. 7

6. A shoe having an upper provided with a surplus of material, a severable seam gathering said surplus of material, and a lining folded upon itself and covering said surplus of material.

' 7. A shoe having an upper provided with a i-shaped fold at'the back thereof, formed from a surplus of the outer material, and stitching joining the meeting edges of said fold, and also provided With a fold formed of the surplus of the lining of the upper, said fold being compressed between the folds of the said outer material and free from the said stitching.
