y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN R. OAHOONE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
cloAoH-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,506, dated December 14, 1880.
Application filed October 27, 1880. (No model.)
. To all whom tf/nay concern:
Be itknown that l, EDWTN B. CAHOONE, ot' Newark, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coach-Pads, .of which the following is afull and exact description.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the top ofthe main plate and its parallel ribs and the channels on each side of the ribs to receive the leather, as hereinafter described. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the under side of the top plate. Fig. 3 is a crosssection through both plates at the terret-hole in their operative position of being locked into each other. Fig. 4 is a top-plan view of a part of the complete pad. Fig. 5 is alongitudinal section through the center of a part of the pad, complete from the terret in all its parts. Fig. 6 is a crosssection of a complete pad, showing the manner of docking in the leather fastening by means of the upper and lower plates. Fig. 7
is a similar cross-section, showing the manner of using a part of vthe pad-bottom leather itself' for the lock between the plates Without the use of a separate strip.
A shows the main plate ot' the pad, which is provided with four parallel longitudinal ribs, B B B B. The outer ribs, B, may be a little higher than the inner ribs, B B. (See Figs. 6 and 7.)
O C are channels between ribs B and B. These channels are of such size and shape as to justhold the bent-,overA leather and the downward-projecting rib of the top plate.
The ribs B B are connected by bridges D D' for the terret and pad-screw, and to secure adjustability of mountin gs.
E is the top plate, having on its under surfaceribs G, which lock into the channels O,
4so as to compress and retain the leatherin the channel.
.H is the top'leather of the pad. I is the stuffing.l L is the bottom leather of the pad.
Fig. 6v shows one mode of applying my invention, and Fig. 7 shows another.
In Fig. 6 lock-strips s, of. leather, are stitched tothe upper' edges ot' the bottom leather, L, and these strips s s are then locked between the ribs of the plates A and E, so as to tightly compress and draw the leather L into its proper place and retain it there.
tis the strip of binding seWed on at the joint of the leather L and strip s. The top leather is now applied and secured by terret and padscrew.
In Fig. 7 the bottom leather is cut Wider, and I dispense with the strips s s and lock the edges of the leather L directly between the ribs of plates A and E. Finish is given by means of the binding-strip t.
Great clxeapness, simplicity, and strength. and adjustability are secured by my improved mode of construction.
I claim as my inventionl. The'combination of the pad-plate A, having ribs B B and B B', forming channels to receive the bottom leather, the bridges to receive the terret and pad-scre\v, a top plate provided with ribs to enter said channels, and
the terret and pad-screw to bind the two plates together, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the pad-plate A, having ribs B B and Bl B', and bridges D D with the top plate, E, having ribs G, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. The strips s s, in combination with plates A and E and bottom leather, L, as andt'or the purposes set forth.
4. In a harness-pad, the bottom leather, L, secured between the plates A and E, and combined with a binding-strip, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5.`The combination of plate A, plate E, and bottom leather, L, all constructed and arrangedY substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. rPhe combination of plates A and E, bottom leather, L, strips s and t, and top leather, H, as and for the purposes set forth.
7. In a harness-pad, the bottom plate, A, of substantially the cross-section shown, having its outer edges curved upwardly, and provided with bridges to receive the terret and pad-screw, in combination with a top piece and the terret and pad-screws, substantially as described.
