UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAIAH PRESTON OSBORN AND WILLIAM A. BAYHAN, OF WILMINGTON, OHIO SAID BAYHAN ASSIGNS HIS RIGHT TO SAID OSBORN.
IMPROVEMENT IN HALTERS FOR HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,877, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IsAIAH PRESTON OS- BORN and WILLIAM A. BAYIIAN, both of Wilmin gton, in the county of Clinton and State ot' Ollio, have invented an Improvement in Halters for Horses, and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing forming part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view of a halter constructed in accordance with our improvement.
Our invention has for its object to improve the construction of that class of halters for horses known to the trade as tive-ring halters,7 whereby we are enabled to economize in the material employed and in the time and labor expended upon their construction. To this end the invention consists in uniting the various straps of the halter by metal plates which are formed with slotted raised edges through which a strap is passed and riveted to said plate, and with an end loop to receive the end of such straps as are folded back and stitched to forni laps,7 as will be hereinafter' more fully described.
By the employment of our improved fasteningplates we are enabled to save in every five-ring halter as now manufactured the labor of forming tive laps or stitched folds, and the leather necessary for their construction, which amounts in all to two feet and six inches, enough in every dozen halters to form seven new ones.
In the accompanying drawing, A is the right cheek-strap of the halter, made in one piece with the crown-piece B 5 and C is the left cheek-piece, made in one piece with the piece D, which carries a buckle, E, by which it is connected to the F and G are the nose and chinstraps, made in one piece, with its ends united by the buckle H, as shown. I are the fasteningplates, constructed, preferably, of malleable-iron, with a loop, J, at one end. The back of each plate is made solid, and the front with a raised rib or flange, K, two opposite sides, L, of which are slotted for the passage of a strap. The cheekpieces of the halter are united at their lower ends to the lower fastening-plates by being passed through the loops J therein and sewed in the form of a lap in the usual manner. rIhe nose and chin-piece is connected to the same plates by be ing passed through the slotted ribs and riveted to the center of each plate, as shown at M. The upper plates are attached to the cheek-straps by rivets in the same manner, but the loops upon these plates are formed diagonally across the end instead of at right angles, for the purpose of imparting the proper inclination to the throatstrap N, whose ends are united to said loops, and whose center is connected to the chin-strap by a short strap, O, and ring P in the usual manner. The lower plates can be used upon either side of the halter, but the upper plates are necessarily rights and lefts.
Our improved plates are similar to an ordinary buckle or ring in externalappearance, but are unlike the latter in permittin g the passage through them of the nose and chin-strap, and the cheek-l straps, which are usually made in separate pieces with each end lapped over a ring and stitched. Where the rings are usually applied to these parts we are enabled to save by the use of the fastening-plates the leather necessary to forni the stitched laps, by which the straps are secured to the rings, which, as previously mentioned, amounts in one halter to two feet and six inches.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A five-ring halter, constructed with the fasten in g-plates I, with the right cheek and crownstrap in one piece, the left cheek and buckle-strap in one piece, and the nose and chin-straps in one piece, substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
2. The fastening-plates I, for the parts of a halter provided with an end loop, J, a central rivet-hole, and the slotted front rib or iiange K, as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
ISAIAH PRESTON OSBORN. WILLIAM A. BAYHAN. Witnesses:
