IMPROVEMENT IN CLASPS FOR HARNESS.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, MARTIN A. PENN, of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridles and Harness; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in bridles and harness generally; and consists in constructing the same without stitching, and in such a manner that any part may be removed or renewed by a person unskilled in the art of leather-working, and in a quick and substantial manner.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view of a bridle as applied, constructed after my invention. Fig. 2 is a ring used for attaching and connecting parts of bridle, as seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows my method of uniting parts by means of screw-rivet. Fig. t represents a side strap of a bridle according to my invention. Fig. 5

I represents a blind constructed after the manner of my invention.

A is a screw provided with a slotted head, a, and Bis a disk provided with afemale screw, into which the screw A is turned. It is evi* dent, as in Fig. 3, that when the screw A is passed through two or more pieces of leather or other substance, and the disk B screwed upon it, the said pieces will be firmly attached together; and it will also be seen that said pieces may easily and quickly be separated by unscrewing the disk B and withdrawing the screw A. This constitutes the main feature of my improved bridle and harness.

In attaching buckles, or when otherwise desired, I use the leather or metallic loop C, ghich I fasten by means of the screw-rivet A By my invention I accomplish a combined bridle and halter. In the headstall the browband D is so constructed that itcan turn upon its screw-rivets. When a halter is desired the bit maybe removed and the brow-band D turned back to the position of the neck-piece i 3 7,Q5 i, dated April 15, 1873; application filed E. The hitching-strap is then fastened to the ring F, and the strain through the connectingpiece G is brought over the neck of the animal just back of the ears. By means of the slots b the bridle may be adjusted to animals of different size by simply loosening the screw-rivets and tightening them again when the parts are properly adjusted. Should any part need may be loosened, and the new part, properly perforated, be inserted.

It is seen that thus any part of a bridle or harness may be made and adjusted by an unskilled person, and in a time far shorter, even, than a skilled harness-maker could stitch it by the common method.

I am aware of the use of common rivets in the construction of harness, but I am not aware that there have ever been used'adjustable rivets, whereby any part or parts may be rap idly and easily removed or renewed without injury by an unskilled person.

I do not limit myself to any particular kind or style of harness in the application of my in vention.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. In bridles orharness, the within descr'ibed adjustable screw rivet, consisting of the screw A provided with the slotted head a, and the thumb-screw B, substantially as and for the purpose shown.

2. In a harness halter or bridle, the combination of a slotted strap, S, with the slides C and adjustable screw-rivets B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The combination of the swinging brow band D, the slottedneck-strap E, and the screw rivet rosette B, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
