To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED L. LILLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at 102 Putnam street, Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Devices, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is to provide a device of the class specified to provide durability for said harness.

A further object is to strengthen a weak place in a harness.

To these ends and also to improve generally upon devices of the class specified, the invention consists inthe matters hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings as the illustrated embodiment of my invention, a main strap -1-, which is preferably composed of a top strap -2- and a bottom strap is a strap especially adapted to extend along back of a horse and in the art is known as a back strap. The cross strap -4- is preferably mounted loosely in said main strap and in the art is especially adapted to extend down each side of the horse to hold customary side straps. Formerly such a cross strap mounted loosely in the back strap of a harness has had a tendency to work back and forth so that it weakened the harness as well as gave the same a poor appearance. Preferably in the invention the main strap has therein wedge members -5- cut away as at -6. A rigid member *7- preferably of suitable metal or non-pliable substance has shoulders -8- and its ends 9-9 are adapted to lit into the recesses -6- in said wedge pieces and is then secured to the top piece -2- by rivets l0- extending therethrough. A rigid band as shown in Fig. 6 may secure the parts. After the parts have thus been assembled they are stitched together in the customary way. It will be seen that in such an arrangement a transverse opening as at -11- is provided for the cross strap 4lto freely or loosely be mounted therein, and the harness is so strengthened that the moving of the cross strap in any direction cannot weaken the harness.

Vhat I claim is:

l. In a harness device, a main strap comprising a top and a bottom piece having wedge `pieces therebetween, said wedge pieces having recesses in their inner ends and being spaced to provide a transverse opening to receive a cross strap, a rigid member arranged in said opening having shoulders respectively in alinement with the edges of said cross strap and having its ends respectively extended into the said recesses in said wedge pieces and secured by suitable means to the top piece of said main strap.

2. In a harness device, a main strap comprising a top and a bottom piece having wedge pieces therebetween, said wedge pieces being spaced to provide a transverse opening to receive a cross strap, a rigid member arranged in said opening having shoulders respectively in alinement with the edges of said cross strap and means for securing said rigid member in place, said means consisting of a rigid band riveted at each end to each end of said rigid member and extending along the face of said top piece.
