WASTE-OUTLET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
Application filed August 6, 1910. Serial No. 575,875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. DUFFY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waste-Outlets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in waste outlets and refers more particularly to a combined closable sink outlet and strainer.
Among the salient objects of the invention are, to provide a construction in which the waste outlet may be closed or opened at will,
" and which is at the same time always provided with a strainer to prevent detritus or extraneous matter from passing into the outlet pipe; toprovide a construction in which the waste stop is permanently secured within its seat and has only sufficient movement to permit its being opened and closed; to provide a construction in which the waste stop or plunger can be shifted into open or closed position by simply slightly turnlng the plunger and is effectively held in its raised position; to provide a construction in which the sink strainer is so formed as to cover any cracks or irregularities due to forming of the waste outlet in the bottom of the sink; to provide a construction which can be readily adapted to various sizes of waste outlets and which can be readily economically manufactured, which is reliable in operation and effectively performs the double function of serving as a waste outlet and a strainer; and in general to provide an improved construction of the character referred to.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure l is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of a sink equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken on lines 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional detail showing the manner of locking the plunger in raised position. Fig. 4 isa vertical detail view of the same showing the parts separated. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of securing the strainer in place.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates as a whole a sink bottom apertured to receive the waste outlet designated as a whole 2. This outlet comprises an externally threaded sleeve 3 which fits within the waste outlet aperture and is provided at its upper end with outwardly flaring flanges or lugs 4: which fit against the upper face of the sink. This sleeve is confined in position by means of a nut 5 which cooperates with the flange 1 in an obvious manner. Between the lugs and nut is preferably interposed a packing 6 to make a water-tight fit. At its inner edge the sleeve is provided with a bracket 7 having a confining ring or guide 8 at its outer end. This ring 8 is annular as to its main body and is provided with a slotted extension 9, as shown more clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. The main body of the ring 8 has an extension or segmental collar 10 which extends around the main body of the ring 8 and terminates short of the slotted extension 9. This ring 8 is adapted to receive the journal pin or rod 11 of the plug or stopper 12. At one side this rod 11 is provided with a feather 13 which terminates short of the lower end of the stud and is adapted to fit within slotted extension 9 of the guide ring 8 when the plug is in its lower or closed position. Upon the upper end of the pin 11 is secured the plug 12 which takes the form of an open ended cap and is adapted to form a substantially water-tight fit with the sleeve when in ,closed position. The downward movement of the plug is limited by means of an external bead 14 which rests upon a shoulder 16 in which is secured an end ring or handle 17. The upward movement of the plug is limited by a strainer 18 which fits over and extends around the plug above shoulder or head 14:. This strainer 18 is of slightly convex form provided with a plurality of apertures 19 and at its outer edge is cut away or ribbed, or scalloped, as shown at 20. The under face of this strainer is provided with a plurality of fingers 21 struck down from the face of the strainer and adapted to fit within recesses 22 formed in the upper edges of the outwardly flaring lugs 4- as shown more clearly in Fig. 5. The stralner may be secured in position by slipping the fingers 21 into the recesses 22 and locked in position by means of a single screw 23 substantially counter-sunk in the face of the strainer and extending into one lug 4.
As a further feature of the invention the strainer is provided at its inner edge with a series of circumferentially extending notches or holes 24. It has been found in practice that by providing the inner edge of the strainer with these apertures the air, when the plug is in open position, will rush in through these holes sucking the water down into the outlet. This greatly facilitates, the rapid emptying of the sink.
The operation of the device is apparent. When the plug is in open position, as shown in Fig. 2, the rod 11 is turned so that the feather l3 rests upon the upper edge of the extension 9, as shown in Fig. 3, and the Water is free to pass out through the sleeve 3. Any extraneous matter, however, will be prevented from passing into the outlet and clogging the latter by reason of the strainer.
. In order to close the outlet of the sink the rod is turned by the ring 17 until the feather is in register with the slot 9 and the plug then lowered. It will be noted that both the strainer and theplug are at all times confined permanently in their position while at the same time they may either or both of them be readily removed, if necessary. The construction is moreover such that it may be secured in position without any danger of injuring the enamel of the sink.
The invention is not limited to the details of construction shown except as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
The combination with a sink having a Waste outlet, of an annular-member seated in said outlet and having flanged sections at its upper end for engaging the inside of the sink about its outlet, means for securely 1 clamping the annular member to the sink, a bracket extending radially into said annular member and having a guide-way formed therein, a pin slidable in said guide-way and having a shoulder for engaging the upper end of the bracket when in raised position, a plug carried by the upper end of said pin and adapted, when in its lower position, to close said annular member, and a strainer over the annular member 'secured to the flanged sections thereof and serving as a guide for said plug and as an abutment to limit the upward movement thereof.
