UNITED STATES' ATENT UFFICE.
CHARLES M. TACK, on Sr. LoUIs, MISSOURI.
SINK-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,043, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed December 29, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES M. TACK, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Siuk-Valve; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the.
accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relatesto an improvement in l sink-valves, the object of the same being to houses, to the danger and annoyance of the occupants.
My invention consists, first, in a novel means for connecting the valve with the ordinary perforated plate or screen with which the oriiice of the drain-pipe is generally covered, and, secondly, in an improved means for securing a rubber or other elastic band to the periphery of the valve.
The details of these devices are explained in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the valve, a portion of which is shown as broken away to exhibit the screen or perforated plate with which the orifice of the drain-pipe is usually covered'. This view also includes a portion of the bottom of the sink. Fig. 2 is a side clevation of the same, showing a part of the valve and the whole of the orifice of the drainpipe and its perforated covering-plate in section, taken in the line of the axis of the valve. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevational View of the device by which the valve is connected with the perforated drain-pipe cover.
In the drawings, A represents that portion of the botttom of the sink in which the drainpipe is placed; B, the perforated drain-pipe Cover or screen; C, the orifice of the drainpipe, all said parts being of the ordinary form.
Secured to the central portion of the perforated plate B is a threaded socket or nut, e, supported upon three legs or stems, 7c, suilciently slender to pass through the perforations in the screen B, each of said legs having a notch, a, on the inner side, (see Fig. 3,) adaptedto receive the inner edges of the perforations in the plate B, and be thus secured by wedges or keys d. This feature of my device will be readily understood by reference to the drawings, in which it will be observed that the nut c is threaded for the reception of a correspondingly-threaded stem, f, depending from the center of abell-shaped valve or cap, D, the peripheral portion of which is provided with a groove, g, and is encircledv by a rubber or other elastic band, h, preferably of the form shown, over which is sprung, for the purpose of securing the latter in position, a wire ring, t'. It will be here observed that the action of this ring upon the elastic band is such as to press the latter into the groove g, and thus prevent the possibility of its beingV drawn off by adhesion to the perforated plate when the valve is being raised. The top or convex part of the valve is provided with two ears, J, so that it may be turned about its axis by the hand in the same manner as an ordinary thu1nb-screw or thumbnut.
To apply the valve to the drain-pipe cover is but the work of a'few minutes, and is accomplished by springing the legs of the nut e, which are purposely made light andilexible, into the perforations of the screen, so that the latter will engage with the notches a. The keys d are then vdriven in, as shown in Fig. 3, and the nut e is thus firmly secured to the screen. The stem f of the valve is then inserted in the nut e, and by the aid of the ears J is with the thumb and fingers twirled round until the lower edge of the band h impinges firmly upon that part of the upper face of the plateB beyond the perforations, thus effectually closing the drain-pipe against the escape of all offensive cfluvia.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sink-valve, theV combination, with the perforated plate or screen B, of the nut or threaded socket e and cap D, sustained upon stems 7c, provided with notches a, adapted to engage with the screen B, and secured thereto by 4keys d, all of said parts constructed and IOO adapted to operate substantially as and for hereunto set my hand this 2d day of Deeernthe purpose set forth. ber, 1884. 2. In a sink-valve the cap D provided with 4 a groove, g, elastic band h, andwre ring i, all CHARLES M' TACK' 5 constructed and adapted to operate substan- Witnesses:
tially as and for the purpose set forth. JOHN C. TACK,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have O. HAMILTON.
