Specification of Letters Patent.
Jtatented Sept. :21, 1909.
Application filed April 52?. 1909. Serial r30. 482,558.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, \Ynnnau J. CARI), a
citizen of the United States, residing at' Edinboro, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jan-Closures, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawmg '1 his invention relates to improvements in closures for cans, jars and other containers. The object of the invention to provide a simple and practical device of this character in the form of an attachment especially adapted for use upon oil cans, syrup cans and the like having screw necks, the attachment having a hingedly mounted cover plate which cannot be lost and which will not stick as is the. case with the usual remo.vable screw caps used as closures for such cans.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of. the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangementof parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can showing the invention applied thereto and with the cover plate in,open position; Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same showing the cover plate in closed position; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the member which carries the cover plate.
In the drawings 1 denotes a can, jar or other container for oil. syrup, etc., and 2 denotes a screw threaded neck for such container.
The invention consists of a cover plate 3 and a member 4 which is applied to the neck 2 and carries the cover: 3 and a suitable fastening therefor. As illustrated, said member at is in the form of a washer-like ring to receive the screw neck 2 and it is preferably retained upon the latter by a screw ring 5 which is screwed upon the neck 2 above the member 1, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2. As illustrated, said member 4 has upon one side an upstanding arm 6 to which the cover plate 3 is hinged by means of a horizontal pivot T passed through a hinge lug 8 formed on the cover plate and through hinge eyes 9 formed on the bifurcated upper end of the arm 6. Said cover plate 6 is preferably ciro pe and of such size I ,;k 2 of the can on be formed upon its bottom with an enlargement 10 to enter the neck 2 and surrounding said enlargement may be provided a packing ring 11 of rubber or other material which will rest upon the projecting upper edge of the screw retaining ring 5, as shown in Fig.
Rising from the member or ring at at a point opposite the hinge arm 6 is a catch arm 12 adapted to engage a finger piece or projection 13 on the cover plate 3 to retain the latter in its closed position. Said member a is preferably made of resilient inaterial, in which case the arm 12 serves as a spring catch, its upper extremity being bent into substantially triangular form to pro vide a head to enter a slot or opening 1 1 formed in the finger piece 13, said trian gular head of the spring catch having a horizontal shoulder 15 to rest upon the to a of the finger piece 13 and a beveled or ii clined upper face 16 which guides the catt arm into the opening 1 .2 when the cover pla :5 is swung to its closed position. WVhen is desired to unlock the cover plate, it only necessary to press inwardly against f beveled face 16 of the projecting head the catch until the shoulder 15 registers w the slot let, whereupon the cover plate r be swung upwardly and over to its open sition shown in Fig. 1. Vhen the c plate is swung downwardly to its closet sition the catch head enters the openin and its shoulder 15 springs into engagen'n with the top of the finger piece 13 to lock the cover plate.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention provides an exceedingly simple and practical closure which is in the form of an attachment adapted to be applied to cans, jars, and other containers hav ing screw necks for the usual removabl screw caps. By substituting the improve closure for the removable screw cap, ti. cover plate cannot become lost because it i attached to the can and it cannot become stuck as do the screw caps when used or syrup cans and the like.
Having thus described the invention wl is claimed is: g
1. The combination of a container hr a screw neck, a member made of res material and having a ring portion t ceive said necl screw ring upon We I I it may 1 portion of the 2 7 36%,;uz W
plate hinged to one of said arms and provided with an opening and a shouldered head upon the other arm to enter said 0 ening in the cover plate to retain the latter in closed position.
,2. The combination of a a screw neck, a member spring catch upon said member substantially triangular head to enter said 0 and retain the In testimony container having signature in t1 arranged on the having a shaped shouldered pening in the cover plate latter in closed position.
whereof I hereunto afiix my 1e presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM J. CARD. neck, a screw ring on the neck to retain said Vitnesses:
member thereon, a cover plate hinged to B. B. BAKER, said member and ha mg an opening and a J. O. SHELTON.
