Safety-Locks for Milk-Bottles, of whichthe' following is a specification.

This invention relates tosafety locks for.

milk bottles.

In the usual course of delivery of milk bottles by the tradesman, the bottles are left outside thedoor where they may be taken with little opportunity for detection.

The object of the, present invention is,

therefore, to provide a safety lock which may be left outside the door to be snapped over the bottle by the tradesman as he leaves the same.

Another object is' to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.

A further object is to provide means whereby a plurality of devices may be read ily coupled together, and locked and unlocked with facility.

The various further objects and advantages will more fully appear from the detailed description and the features. of novelty will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring particularly to Figs; 1 to 4 of the drawings, the improved safety lock consists of a cap formed preferably in two segmental sections or halves 10 and 11 hinged at the longitudinal edge-thereof 12. ter are formed with registering ears 15 and- 16 at their longitudinal edges. These ears are formed with registering perforations through which may pass a locking member to be secured from the interior of the door. Any suitable locking member may be em .ployed. :Preferably, we use a chain 17' formed of a plurality of links which may be threaded through the perforations of the registering ears, to eifectuallyprevent relative movement therebetween, thus locking the'sections together. .At the upper end of the chain a ring 18 may be linked, thus preventing the removal of the chain from one end, and at the other end of the chain is linked a special form of link 19 which hooks under thedoor and is of a size sulficiently,

small to pass freely through the registering cars. This link isformed with a reduced fiat portion 20 which fits under the door 21 and a pin 22 which may be used for.

- In theuseof our safety device, when it is d esired to'leave the same ready for inse'rtion upon the milk bottle by the tradesman,

the cap is closed and the chain 17 threaded through the registering ears as hereinbefore described. The link 19 is then placed under the door and the latter closed. This effectually prevents the removal of'the cap and chain. When the tradesman delivers the bottle in the morning, he merely grasps the cap and snaps it over the neck of the the chain may be pulled out from the ears 1 and the cap swung open. It will be noted that the bottom of the cap is made to contact the body of the bottle, so as toprevent the insertion of an instrument under the springs to tamper with the same in an attempt to remove the cap.

In the diagrammatic view illustrated in Fig. 5, it will be noted that a plurality of caps A, B and C may be strung upon the same chain 17, so that a number of bottles may be locked with the use of the same chain. When extra bottles are desired, it is merely necessary to string extra caps upon the chain.

In the modified form of cap illustrated in 6, the cap sections and 31 maybe hingedftogetherat point 32 adjacent the base of the cap and the locking ears 33 may 7 be formed at the top of'the cap. The usual chain or other locking member may pass through the registering ears as in the preferred construction illustrated and also snap springs may be disposed at the interior'of the sections as previously explained.

It will be understood that the sections of the cap may be stamped out of sheet metal or they may be cast, in either event constituting a very inexpensive construction which may be supplied tothe customer by thet articledelivered in bottles.

The operation of the device is very simple and the same may be used by a person with very lit'tle or no mechanical skill;
