UNITED STATES HERRMAN REES,

PATENT OFFICE.

OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO LOUIS J. REES AND HENRY P. REES, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.

EAR-RING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,433, dated February 18,1890.

Application filed March 1, 1889. Serial No. 301 6414. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERRMAN REES, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Rings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in ear-rings of that class in which the ear-wireis retained onthe lobe of the car by means of suitable fastening devices.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved ear-ring, shown partly in section; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same 011 line 3 3 Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the ear-wire of my improved ear-ring, and B the setting of a diamond or other precious stone which is applied to the ear-wire. The upper backwardly-bent end of the ear-wire A is passed through a hole in the lobe of the ear and through an eye (Z ina locking-bar G, that is hinged to the lower end of the ear-wire A. A keeper e is pivoted to a stud f on the lock ing-bar 0, below the eye d, said keeper being provided with an arc-shaped slot 6, which is enlarged at one end, so as to permit the upper end of the ear-wire to enter into said slot after the same has passed through the eye cl of the locking-bar. The end of the ear-wire A is provided with a contracted neck, forming a knob e at its upper end, which contracthe locking-bar O can be swung on its hinged connection in downward direction into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig l. In this position of the locking-bar the ear-wire can be readily removed from the ear or applied thereto, as the case maybe. For applying the ear-ring, the ear-wire A is passed through the perforation in the lobe of the ear, the locking-bar 0 moved in upward direction, so that the eye at its upper end passes over the upper end of the ear-wire A, after which the pivoted keeper e is applied to the end of the ear-wire, and thereby the ear-ring retained on the lobe of the car.

My improved ear-ring has the advantage that it is retained firmly in position on the lobe of the ear, that the setting is suspended close to the ear, and that the ear-ring can be applied to or detached from the ear with great facility.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- An earring comprising a curved eanwire having a knob at its upperend, a locking-bar hinged to the lower end of said ear-wire and provided with an eye for engaging the upper end thereof, said bar being provided with a laterally-projecting stud below said eye, and a keeper pivoted on said stud and provided with an arc-shaped slot for engaging said knob, one end of said slot being enlarged, substantially as described.

In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.

HERRMAN REES.

WVitnesses:

PAUL GOEPEL, JOHN ALONZO STRALEY.
