FREDERICK W. ROHDE, 'OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,022, dated August 11, 1903. Application filed May 14, 1903. alarm. 157,071. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. ROHDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cluster-Settings for Rings, Brooches, or the Like, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved cluster-setting for rings, brooches, and the like, which is composed of two separate parts, whereby different material may be employed in the construction of the setting; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a cluster-setting of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved cluster-setting on an enlarged scale; Fig. 2, a side view showing the setting applied to a ring; Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of the setting; Fig. 4, a plan view of the crown-piece of the setting; Fig. 5, a plan view ofthe basepiece of the setting; Fig. 6, a side View of the crown-piece of the setting, and Fig. 7 a side view of the base-piece of the setting.
In the practice of my invention I provide a cluster-setting of the class specified which comprises a base-piece a and a crown-piece h, and the base-piece a is. circular in general form, so as to form a central circular opening a and said base piece is provided with radially-arranged and upwardly-curved fingers of, connected at the base by curved members (1 so as to form spaces a between the tingers a which are V-shaped in general form.
The crown-piece b is also circular in general form, so as to form a central circular opening or space 5 and said crown-piece is also provided with radially-arranged arms b which are preferably slightly inclined downwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, and the ends of which are provided with knobs or heads I)", having laterally, downwardly, and
inwardly curved fingers b and between the arms b are spaces b the inner and side walls of which are curved, as shown at 17 In practice the crown-piece b is set into the base-piece a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the fingers b of the crown-piece rest on the sidesof the fingers a of the base-piece, as shown at c, and are secured thereto by soldering or in any preferred manner.
In practice diamonds or other jewels or precious stones are set in the opening b of the crown-piece and also in the spaces 5 surrounding said central opening, and the inner and side walls of the openings Z) and the fingers a of the base aserve to hold'said jewels or precious stones in position, said parts being provided with the usual teeth or attaching prongs, which are not shown.
By making the base a and crown-piece b of separate parts, as herein described, I am onabled to use two different materials in the construction of my improved cluster-setting for instance, the base-piece may be made of gold and the crown-piece of platinum, or this arrangement may be reversed, and in this way various efiects may thus be produced.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown my improved cluster-setting connected with an ordinary finger-ring d, and in this operation the base-piece of the setting is secured to the bezel d of the ring in the usual manner; but it will be apparent that the setting may be secured to a brooch, scarf-pin, or similar device in the same way.
My invention is not limited to the details of the forms of the separate parts of the setting as herein shown and described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. A cluster-setting for diamondsand other precious stones, comprising a base-piece and a crown-piece, the base-piece being circular in general form and provided with radiallyarranged and upwardly and outwardly directed fingers, and the crown-piece being also circular in general form and provided with radially-arranged arms having laterally and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 10 my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 12th day of May, 1903.
FREDERICK W. ROHDE.
Witnesses:
