`THE(,)Dc'nn W. BURGER, 'or New YORK, N. Y.
` 1 Leners Pam: No. 89,914, camz May 11, 1869.
IMPRovEMENT nvv vnms 'ron c'ANs.
The' Schedule :referred to in these `Letters Patent and Part of the same.
To all whom 'itmay concern Be it known that I, THEoDoRn W. BURGER, of New York, in the county'of New York, and State of New York, have invented a' new and` improved Vent for Cans, Stc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable vothers skilled in the art to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figurel is atop view of a can, to which myimproved vent has been applied.
Figure 2 is a detail vertical section of the same,
. takenV through the line x x, g. l.
YSimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 1 Y V My invention has for its object to fiu'nish an irnl proved. vent for cans and' other packages, for vputting 'up oils, varnishes, and other liquids, which shall be C is'a plug, or cap, screwing into or upon, or otherwise attached tothe upper, orv projecting end of the socket B, so as to close the said socket closely when the said plug, or cap O, is in place.A l
` The joint between thev plug, or cap C, and the end ofthe socket B, may be packed with rubber, or equivtight. l a
D is a short wire orchain, the upper end of which is secured to the plu or cap O, and which passesdown through the socket into the interior of the can A.
Upon the lower end of the rod or chain C is formed, or to it is attached an enlargement, knob, button, or other stop, of such a size as toy prevent its passing through the socket B.
This construction prevents the plug, or cap C, from being accidentally lost or misplaced, and insures its being always `at hand, ready for use, when required.
A -vent thus constructed can never become choked or illed up, which is the great objection to tubevents from the drying of the liquid that may remain'in or adhere to said tubes. In retailing non-volatile liquids from the can, it is 'not necessary that the plug, or cap 0, should be secured to the socket B every time the can-is used. In this case it maybe set upon the upper end of said socket, and when the can is inclined, to pour out the liquid, it will drop off, and allow the air to have free Vaccess to the interior of the can.
Having thus described my invention,
, 'I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patentv 'i The plug, or cap C, fitting within the so'cket B of dthe can, when provided with the pendent wire stop D,
as herein described, for the purpose speciied.
` The above specication of my invention signed byv alent packing, tov insure the saidj oints being made air
