UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BEARDSLEY, OF BEACON, IOWA.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIPICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,705, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed February 27, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM: BEARDSLEY, of Beacon, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved stopper for bottles containing sodawater or other aerated liquids.
The invention consists of the combination of parts and their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of my improved bottle-stopper and of a bottle in part. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of the cap.
The bottle A, of an y desired shape or size, is provided with an externally-screw-threaded neck, B, on which a screw-cap, O, is screwed having a central aperture, 1). On the under side of the cap 0 a packing, E, of leather, rubber, or other suitable material, having an aperture corresponding with the aperture D, is secured, and the bottle contains a glass or other ball-valve, F, adapted to close the aperture D. On the inside of the bottle, in prac tice, a series of triangular or crescent-shaped projections, G, are formed at a greater or less distance from the neck, said projections extending continuously around the bottle. The bottle is filled with sodawvater or other aerated liquid under pressure, which forces the ball valve against the seat formed by the packing E, thus closing the bottle. To open the bottle the ball-valve Fis pressed down and the liquid is permitted to flow out of the bottle. When the bottle is opened, the ball F rests against the ridges or projections G, and is thus prevented from closing the opening in the cap.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the apertured cap fitted upon the bottle-neck,ot' the apertured packing interposed directly between the cap and the upper edge of the bottlo-11eck,a1n.l provided upon the inner surface, around its aperture, with a pendent annulus or flange, and the ball-valve. substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM BEARDSLEY.
