UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM BEABDSLEY, OF BEACON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,698, dated August 19, 1879; application filed June 18, 1879.
To all whom it may concer/n Be it known that I, WILLIAM BEARDSLEY, of Beacon, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Imd proved Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a specication.
The invention consists in combining a stopper provided with shoulders, tubular extension, orifice, and flanged plug with a straight bore, a counterbore, packing-ring, and spiral spring, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section ofthe stopper and the neck of the bottle with the stopper closed, and Fig. 2 represents the same with the stopper open.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A is the neck of the bottle, having a straight bore, a, extending up from the conical portion b of the body. Above the straight part a is a counterbore, e, in the bottom whereof is placed a piece of ring packing, d, and on this a spiral spring, e.
vThe stopper B is composed of a head with a shoulder, f, to iit on the top of the neck, a reduced portion to fit in the counterbore, terminating in a shoulder, g, that bears on the spiral spring, and a tubular extension, h, that ts closely1 in the straight bore of the neck. This stopper, it will be observed, is tubular and open at both ends; but a plug, C, is placed in the lower end, and the plug is provided with an elastic flange, i, adapted to fit against the conical portion of this part of the bottle when the stopper is thrown up to close the bottle, as in Fig. 1. In the side of tube h, just above the plug C, is a lateral opening, j, for the passage of the liquid into the tube when the stopper is pressed in for the purpose of pouring out the liquid.
The device is operated as follows: The stopper is closed by the pressure of the spring on the shoulder g throwing it out, carrying the orifice j up in the bore a, and forcing the elastic ange 'i up against the conical sides of the bottle just below the bore, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, whereby the flow of liquid or gas out of the bottle is completely stopped.
To fill the bottle or pour out the contents, the finger is applied to the top of the head and pressure exerted, whereby the stopper is forced down, the iiange i carried away from the sides, leaving a space for the liquid to iiow around it and pass through the orifice j in or out of the bottle, as the case may be, as shown in Fig. 2.
When a gaseous liquid is to be placed in the bottle, the springemay be dispensed with, as the pressure of the gas will keep the stopper forced up and the flange i in contact with the sides.
The ange 't' must be sufficiently elasticl to pass freely through the bore a' when the stopper is placed in the bottle, and then spread out fiat or with a slight cup, as in the drawings.
This arrangement furnishes an eiiicient selfclosing stopper, which is at the same time economical, easily repaired, and not so liable to get out of repair as those now generally in use.
This invention can be applied with great advantage to faucets by providing the outer or orifice end thereof with a counterbore to contain the spring and packing, as in the bottle, and a tube with an exterior head and a flexible flange on the opposite end in the faucet, and operating to open and close thefaucet the same as in the bottle-neck.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The stopper B, provided with shoulders f and g, tubular extension h, orifice j, and flanged plug C, in combination with the straight bore a, counterbore o, packing-ring d, and spiral spring e, to furnish a self-closing stopper for bottles, substantially as described.
WILLIAM BEARDSLEY.
