UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS G. AUSTEN, OF OSWEGO, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,730, dated August 3, 1880.
Application filed May 27, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GoonELL Ans- TEN, of ()swego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle Stopper or Sprinkler, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices that are designed to close the mouth of a bottle and yet to permit the gradual ejection or sprinkling of its contents.
The drawing represents an enlarged vertical sectional elevation of the device applied to a bottle.
In the drawing, A represents a bottle, and B a centrally-perforated cork fixed tightly in the neck thereof. 4
A tube, (J, with its bore contracted, as shown at a, to form a valveseat, provided with an annular flange, b, to fit on top of the cork B and the bottle A, and having its upper end screw-threaded, as shown at c, is tightly fitted into this cork B, as shown, so that there is an open communication between the inside of the bottle A and the interior of the said flanged tube 0.
D is a valve, conical on its upper face, so as to fit tightly into the valve-seat a, and having an upward-projecting stem, (1, which stem is tubular from about its center to its upper end, as shown, and an opening, f, through the side of the valve-stem d communicates with its bore, as shown. The upper end of this valvestem is screw-threaded, as shown at g.
E is a screw-cap, provided with an orifice, h, in its top, into which orifice h the upper end (No model.)
of the valve-stein (1 screws or is otherwise fastened, while the said screw-cap E screws down on the threaded portion of the flanged tube (3, above the flange thereof, so that when in the position shown in the drawing the valve D is set below its seat a, to permit the passage of the contents of the bottle around the valve and its stem through the orifice f, and out of the opening inthe top of the valve-stem in the direction of the arrows. The screw-cap E when in this position operates by closing tightly down on the top of the tube 0, to prevent the escape of the contents of the bottle out of the top of the said tube 0.
In order to close the valve D, and prevent the escape of any of the contents of the bottle when the bottle is reversed, the screw-cap E is unscrewed far enough to draw the valve D close up into its seatc.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination, with the centrally-perforated cork B, of the flanged tube 1) 0, having its bore contracted at a to form a "alve-seat, the valve D, having a side-apertured tubular stem, (1, made suflieientl y smallerthan the tube 0 to allow an open space between them, and the cap E, detachably connected with the upper end of tube and valve-stem, as shown and described.
THOMAS GOODELL AUSTEN.
