To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS l/V. Evans, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nozzle Stoppers for Bottles and other Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to nozzle-stoppers for bottles and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is particularly designed for use as a closure device for perfumery bottles, ethyl chlorid bottles and other bottles or vessels from which it is desired, at times, to discharge small amounts of the contents thereof in the form of a spray; a further object being to provide a device of this class which may be conveniently used in treating internal organs of the body such as the nose, throat. and other organs, and which may also be used for various other purposes; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention forming the basis of this application belongs to the same class as that described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 808,278, granted to me Dec. 26, 1905; and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottle to which my improvement is applied as a closure device, Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing only a part of the construction shown in Fig. 1, and showing only a part of said construction in section. Fig. 3 a side view of a nozzle tube shown in Fig. 1 and showing a modification.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a bottle or similar vessel 0 having an interiorly threaded neck a and I also provide a nut-shaped device I) the bottom side of which is provided with a tubular extension 6 threaded on its outer side and adapted to be screwed into the neck a and provided with a valve seat 6 The nut-shaped device 7) is Specification of Letters Patent.

also provided on the top side thereof with another tubular extension 6 which is threaded on its outer side as shown at b and also threaded on its inner side as shown at Z)", and the tubular extension Z2 of the nutshaped device Z) is closed by a tubular plug 0 which is threaded on its outer side to corre spond with thethread b in the tubular extension 6 of the nut-shaped device Z). I also provide a cap cl in the bottom of which is a recess or chamber (Z adapted to receive the parts 6 and c, and said cap is provided on the bottom side thereof with 21 depending flange (Z3 which is interiorly threaded as shown at d so as to engage the exterior thread on the tubular extension Z) of the nut-shaped device 6, and said cap is also provided centrally with an annular rim (Z which is preferably milled on its face and by means of which the cap cl which also serves as a nut may be manipulated, and the cap 03 is also provided with a central bore or passage d which is interiorly threaded, and passed centrally through said cap and through the tubular plug 0 and the nut-shaped device 6 is a nozzle tube c to the lower end of which is secured a valve (2 which is adapted to be seated on the valve seat I) at the bottom of the tubular exten sion 6 of the nut-shaped device I). The lower end portion of the nozzle tube 6 above the valve 6 is provided with a side port or passage 6 and said nozzle tube is threaded from the point e downwardly as clearly shown at c in Fig. 1. The thread 0 on the nozzle tube 6 is a right hand thread, and the thread 6 on exterior of the tubular extension 6 of the nut-shaped device Z) is a left hand thread, and the thread on the tubular plug 0 is a right. hand thread, and by means of this construction when the cap d is turned in one direction the nozzle tube 6 will move downwardly and will open the valve 6 and when said cap (Z is turned in the other direction the nozzle tube 6 will move upwardly and will close the valve 6 The parts 6 and 0 form a packing box in which packing is placed as shown at f, and the central portions of the parts 7) and c are large enough to permit the nozzle tube 6 to pass freely therethrough.
The movement of the cap d as above described, in order to operate the valve 6 and open and close the lower end of the tubular extension Z2 of the nut-shaped device Z) is a very slight movement, and while I have shown the thread 6 on the nozzle tube 6 as continuous, this is not necessary, and that part of said tube where it passes through the nut-shaped device 6, the tubular plug 0 and the packing f may be omitted if desired as shown at e in Fig. 3.
The nozzle tube 6 is provided at the top thereof with a spraying nozzle 9 which is screwed thereonto and which may be de tached if desired, and said nozzle tube is threaded externally, and I also provide a supplemental nozzle tube It the lower end of which is provided with a nut-shaped head if adapted to be screwed onto the nozzle 9 as shown in Fig. 1, and the upper end of which is also provided with a spraying nozzle h The operation of this device will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
It will be understood that the contents of the bottle or receptacle (4 of whatever class, are under pressure, and by simply turning the cap (Z in one direction the valve 6 will be opened, and the contents of the bottle will flow out through the lower end of the tubular extension 5 of the nut-shaped device Z), and through the port or passage 6 in the lower end of the nozzle tube 6, and through said nozzle tube and through the spraying nozzle 9 in the manner of other devices of this class, and when said cap (Z is turned in the opposite direction the valve 6 will be closed.
In the use of this device for treating the throat, nose or other internal organs of the body, the supplemental nozzle tube It is employed as shown in Fig. 1, and the operation of the device when this supplemental nozzle tube is employed will be the same as when the nozzle tube 6 only is employed.
The nut-shaped device I) constitutes, as will be understood, a closure plug for the bottle or other vessel, and various changes in and modifications of the form and construction of this part of my improved bottle stopper, together with the other parts connected therewith, may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A closure device for bottles or other vessels of the class described comprising a nut-shaped plug member provided on its bottom side with a tubular extension adapted to be screwed into the neck of the bottle or other vessel and on its upper side with a tubular extension which is threaded both externally and internally, said plug member being provided with a central bore or pas sage, a tubular plug screwed into the tubular extension on the upper side of the nutshaped plug member, a cap screwed onto said tubular extension and inclosing said tubular plug, and a nozzle tube passed through said cap, through said tubular plug and through said nut-shaped plug member and provided at its lower end with a valve adapted to be seated on the lower end of the tubular extension at the bottom of said n1ember, said nozzle tube being provided above said valve with a side port or passage, and the lower end portion of said nozzle tube being threaded and the threads on said nozzle tube and on the exterior of the tubular extension on the upper side of the nutshaped plug member being opposite threads.
2. In a closure device for bottles and similar vessels, astuffing box device adapted to be screwed into the neck of the bottle and provided with a cap which is screwed thereonto, and a nozzle tube which is passed through said cap and through said stufling box construction and provided at its lower end with a valve and above said valve with a side port or passage, said cap and said tube being correspondingly threaded, and the threads in said cap and on said tube and the thread by which the cap is connected with the stuiiing box construction being such that the rotation of said cap in one direction will open said valve and in the other direction will close said valve.
