Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed J'uly 1, 1911.
Patented May 21, 1912. Serial No.1636,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TOMBEUR, a subject of the King of Belgium, and resident of Brussels, Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Taps for Acid-Containers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in taps used for closing bottles and tubes containing liquid carbonio acid and for discharging the contents and the object of the improvement is to provide a tap which closes hermetically the bottle or tube and, when opened, allows the gases to flow between threaded surfaces to the bottle or discharge tube and then to 'the apparatus in which they are to be used.
The improved tap is represented in the acl companylng drawing, in which:
Figure l is a vertical central section of the tap. Fig. 2 is a similar section of a somewhat modified tap. 'Fig 3 is a horizontal section Online X-X of Fig. 2.
The improved tap comprises Y a hollow metal body a, provided with a central threaded hole on its lower end b and screwed into the top of a bottle or tube b containing liquid carbonio acid. On the interior bottom of the body a is a valve seat c and the interior surface of the hollow is threaded for about half its full height. An outwardly threaded valve CZ is screwed into said body a and the lower end of valve d is provided with a disk e made of ebonite and loosely engaged into a corresponding hole into the lower end ofvalve d. Said disk e has for its object to be applied upon the seat c for regulating the delivery of the acid. Valve al is provided with a rotation rod -f and a handle y. About the middle of the lower threaded part of a is a neck l2, to which may be adapted a pipe joint 'if connecting for instance the bottle with a re extinguishing device or the like. A suitable packing secures the tightness of the valve rod.
In operation, .the handle is rotated, and the valve OZ, is raised from the disk c, and
the gas is permitted to pass through they opening in the bottom of the casting a, and
into the cavity 7c, from whence it escapes between the threads of the valve and its seat to the opening m, in the neck L.
The tap shown in Figs. 2 and 3 differs only from the above described one in that the seat C of the valve is provided with circular grooves 0, in which grooves penetrates the material of the yielding cbonite disk e, when pressed down upon said seat, the tightness between bottle and tap being thus absolutely perfect.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A tap of the class described, comprising a' casing formed with a threaded seat in the bottom of which is a raised portion, said casing having a small opening in its bottom located centrally of the raised portion, the casing having a threaded extension above the plane of the bottom of the seat and formed with a small lateral opening, the casing also having a hollow externally threaded extension on its top, a threaded valve having a stem, the threaded portion of the valve extending below the lateral opening to control the latter, said valve engaging the threaded seat and formed in its bottom with a recess, a block of packing located in the recess to coperate with the raised portion in the bottom of the seat to form a seal therewith, a packing gland fitting in the hollow extension, and a threaded cap' for retaining the packing gland in position.
2. A tap of the class described, comprising a casing formed withfa threaded seat in the bottom of which is a raised portion provided with annular grooves, said casing having a small 'opening in its bottom located centrally of the raised portion, the casing having a, threaded extension above the plane of the bottom of the seat and formed with a small lateral opening, the casing also having a hollow externally threaded extension on its top, a threaded valve havinga stem, the threaded portion of the lvalve extending below the lateral opening to control the latter,
said valve engaging the threaded seat and of packing having a flat bottom located in In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the recess to ooperate with the raised pormy hand in presence of two witnesses. tion and the grooves therein in the bottom of the seat to form a seal therewith, a paek- JOSEPH TOMBEUIL ing gland litting in the hollow extension, Witnesses: and a threaded cap for retaining the pack- (l1-IAS.
