UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM SHEPHERD, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO ARTHUR GEORGE PEAD ALLT, OF SAME PLACE.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,005, dated June 25, 1889.
Application filed August 10, 1888. 8erial Ne. 282, l20. (No model.) Patented in England October 11, 1884, No. 18,485, and October 9,1836,N0.12,897.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM SHEPHERD, wine and spirit merchant, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, of 1& Great Marlborough Street, London, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steppers for Bottles, Jars, and other Vessels, (for which I have obtained Letters Patentin Great Britain, No. 13,485, dated October 11,1884, and in Great Britain, No. 12,807, dated October 9, 1886,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bottlestopper comprising a stopper proper and a threaded ring for .seating the stopper without turning the latter upon its seat.
The object of the invention is to provide a bottle-stopper of this character which may be sealed with wax, if desired, and in which the stopper is inclosed and protected by the ring which is detachably connected therewith.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a vertical section of a bottle-neck provided with this improved bottle-stopper. Fig. 2 represents this improved bottle-stopper, the threaded ring being shown in vertical section and the stopper proper in elevation. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of a bottle-neck provided with this improved bottle-stopper, the threaded ring of which is shown in vertical section, said ring being adapted to screw over the bottle-neckinstead of into it, as in the other figures. Fig. l represents a vertical section of a bottle-neck provided with. this improved bottle-stopper, the threaded ring thereof being shown in section and provided with a flange which shuts over the rim of the bottle.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
This bottle-stopper comprises a stopper proper A, and ahollowscrew-threaded ring B.
The stopper proper A consists of a cylindrical plug, of about the diameter of the bottle-neck, provided with an annular flange a and with an annular groove 0, the latter being near the top of the plug.
The ring l3 is provided with a screw thread Z), which may be external to fit within the bottle-neck, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and i, or internal to iit over the bottle-neck, as shown in Fig. 3, in the latter case being provided with internal projections c to rest 011 the flange (L This ring is provided near its top with an annular recess 11, forming a shoulder 0 lVhen the ring B and stopper proper A are assembled, the annular groove to of the stopper is opposite the annular recess 1) of the ring, and an elastic band C surrounds the stopper within the groove and rests on the shoulder b of the ring, the top of the stopper A being preferably flush with the top of the screw-threaded ring.
The bottle-neck D is provided with a screw thread 0, which meshes with the screw-thread of the ring B and With a valve-seat d. This valve-seat may be at the top of the bottle neck, as in Fig. 3, or on an internal shoulder, as in Figs. 1 and +t. A washer Zmay be inter posed between the valve-seat d and the flange a of the stopper proper A.
In Fig. at the screw-threaded ring B is provided with an outwardly-projecting downturned flange a, which shuts over the rim of the bottle when the stopper is in position.
In opening or closing the bottle, the screwthreaded ring can be turned to clamp the stopper proper A without turning the latter, so that the washer or packing is not dragged or torn when inserting or removing the stop per.
The recess 1) in the top of the ring B forms with the top of the stopper A an annular chamber in which a wax-seal may be placed, if desired. \Vhether the wax-seal be used or omitted, the top of the stopper is protected by the surrounding top of the ring.
I claim- 1. A bottle-stopper domprising a stopper proper provided with a flange on its body and with an annular groove near its top, a projecting downturned flange, and an elastic screw-threaded ring provided with an annuband inserted in said recess and groove and lar recess in its top, and an elastic band inuniting said stopper and ring.
serted in said recess and groove and uniting 5 Said Stopper and ring WVILLIAM SHEPHERD.
2. A bottle-stopper comprising a stopper Witnesses: proper provided with a flange on its body HENRY BIRKBEOK, and with an annular groove near its top, a 34 Southampton Buildings, London. screw-threaded ring provided with an annu- WALTER J. SKERTEN,
