SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,069, dated October 8, 1901. Application filed June 12, 1901. Serial No. 64,224. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY B. KNORR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacony, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention has relation to a can especially adapted for containing condensed milk or similar fluid substances, and in such connection it relates to the particular construction and arrangement thereof.
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a can which may be readily opened for discharge of the contents and in which pouring of the matter or substance therefrom may be effected without loss or spattering of the substance or matter around about the head or sides of the can, and, second, a can which, after tilting for removing contents, has been caused to assume its normal or vertical position, and any matter or sub stance carried to the point of discharge will be returned to the interior of the can through a gutter provided in the head without loss of the matter or substance, and, further, a can in which the internal contents are kept in a healthy condition free from contact, comparatively speaking, with the atmosphere.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a can when constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section through a can embodying the features of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the can.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the can, of cylindriform shape or type, provided with a flaring throat or discharge-neck a.
b is a sunken bottom, and c is the overlapping sunken head provided with a gutter c, of V or other preferred shape, formed substantially midway in the head and extending downward into the body of the can and located contiguous to the throat or discharge= neck a of the can.
02 represents an incision adapted to be made in the gutter c for permitting of the discharge from the interior of the can of its contents 5 5 into the neck or throat a of the can A and for removal of the same therefrom intoany suitable receptacle. This opening d,provided in the gutter 0, also acts as a vent to facilitate not only the discharge of the contents of the can, but also furnishes the amount of air necessary to permit of such discharge in the tilting of the can, and when the can has been caused to assume its normal or vertical position any matter carried out into the throat or 6 5 1. A can for condensed milk or the like, provided with a cylindrical wall expanded laterally near one edge into a spout or dischargethroat, and a head having a downwardly-inclined gutter extending to the base of the spout and adapted when perforated to form a discharge-opening from the interior of the can to the spout or throat, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A can provided with a sunken head having an inclined throat or discharge-neck and with a substantially V- shaped gutter adapted to be punctured to form a discharge-opening into the throat or neck of the can located contiguous to the said gutter in the head of said can, substantially as and for the purposes de scribed.
