GARBAGE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,452, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed February 5, 1885, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known .that I, WILLIAM C. GROFF, Sr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to boxes for containing a receptacle for garbage, and has for its object the provision of a device cheap and simple to construct, easy to reach for placing garbage therein or removing it therefrom, and which will keep the sun, flies, and animals from reaching the refuse matter placed therein.
To attain the desired end my invention consists, essentially, in a box having a lid at the top and a door at one side, in combination with a suitable receptacle fitting into the box, and secured thereto by a chain of sufficient length to permit the emptying of the garbage, While preventing the taking away of the receptacle, the whole combined and arranged to be placed in position in-a fence, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the box as it appears when placed. in position for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the box, and Fig. 3 is a plan View thereof. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view at line 00 m of Fig. 3.

A is the body of the box, constructed of wood or other preferred material.
B is a cover or lid at the top of the box, hinged at C, and provided with a knob, I). This cover has a downwardly-projecting lip, E, upon three sides, fitting closely over the edges of the box to render it tight as possible.
F is a door at the side of the box, hinged at its upper edge.
G is a striprunning around the box in such a manner as to fit against the outside of a fence when placedin position therein, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
His a receptacle fitting into the box A, and I is a chain secured to the receptacle, and also to the interior of the box, preventing the removal of the receptacle excepting to empty it.
My improved garbage-box may be readily placed in position in a fence, and is easy of access both to the occupant of the house and the scavenger.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A garbage-box consisting of a box, A, hav' ing a lid, B, provided with a depending edge, E, side door, F, encircling strip G, receptacle H, and chain I, attached to the receptacle and to the interior of the box, the whole combined and arranged to be placed in a fence, substantially as shown and described.
