IMPROVEMENT |N HINGES.

Specitcation forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 194,686, dated August 28, 1877 application filed Y May 7, 1877.

To all whom it may concern: v

Be it known that I, DAVID H. JAGGARD, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following description and aecompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention most nearly appertains to make and use the same without further invention or experiment.

The object of my invention is to provide a hinge that will be concealed between the joint forming the cover and bod y of the box, and so that no projections will appear.

It consists mainly of a flat link pivoted to each of the plates or leaves composing the hinge, which works in an automatic manner upon pivots in spaces between lugs formed upon the leaves, and to other details of construction hereinafter more fully described, and definitely claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings and letters ot' reference marked thereon, Figure 1 is a top view, showing the hinge in position. .y Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a view of the link..

The leaves or plates a b are provided with lugs or projections c c and d d, between the spaces of which is placed a hat link, E, which is pivoted to the lugs c c and d d by the pins ff. This lilik moves in an automatic manner between the lugs when the hinge is operated. The sides of the lugs c c are recessed, and work on the ends of the lugs d d, which are rounded for this purpose.

[n attaching my hinge to boxes the inner rear sides of the top and body are to be mortised to a considerable depth, so as to take in the height of the lugs, and form a close joint when the cover or lid is shut down.

The outer shell of the box is not out away, but remains intact, and this is an important feature of Iny invention, and almost indispensable to line work, such as watch-cases, as the outer portion need not be marred at all, except by perforations for screws or rivets.

In attaching my hinge to wood boxes the automatic link E, in the operation of opening the box, permits the lid when in a vertical position to be carried down a little distance from the top edge of the side of the box, and thus forms a stop against the body of the box and a support for the lid or cover.

In practice, for watch-cases, this stop may be effected by forming a rib on the top of the lugs d d, in which case the ends of the lugs c c will act as dogs to arrest the further opening of the hinge after the lid has been brought to a vertical position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with the plates or leaves a, b of a hinge, provided with lugs or projections c d, the link- E, constructed and operating substantially in the manner as herein set forth and speciied.

2. The lugs c c, provided with recesses, in combination with the lugs d d, provided with rounded ends, which lit and operate in the recesses, substantially in the manner as set forth and described.
